📢 Breaking new ground in corporate sustainability! Today at #COP16Colombia, we announce that the first-ever science-based targets for both freshwater and land have been adopted by trailblazing companies. 👇 🏔️ The first-ever science-based targets for both freshwater and land have been adopted by global luxury group Kering. 💧 Global biopharma company GSK and building materials company Holcim have adopted the first science-based targets for freshwater. The announcement comes following the conclusion of our year-long corporate pilot program, with the majority of participating companies receiving validation for some or all targets. This positive milestone comes as world and business leaders gather at COP16 in Colombia, where urgent action to preserve biodiversity and stop the destruction of nature have been at the heart of negotiations. 🌎 SBTN’s Executive Director Erin Billman said: “Our corporate pilot has shown that science-based targets for nature are both feasible and valuable, closing a critical gap in corporate sustainability. We’re pleased to see Kering, GSK and Holcim lead the way by publicly adopting the world’s first science-based targets beyond climate; demonstrating that a clear and credible pathway for ambitious action for nature is possible. The time for companies to act is now — responsibly, urgently, and with the ambition that matches the scale of the challenge.” Science-based targets for nature are a key mechanism for companies to deliver on the Global Biodiversity Framework. Aiming directly at the drivers and pressures of nature loss, science-based targets for nature will tell a company if they are taking enough of the right actions, in the right places, at the right time in order to do their part to reverse and halt nature loss by 2030. These much needed targets on nature build on and complement existing corporate targets on climate. 🌱🎯 This is just the beginning. #COP16 in Cali calls for bold action: are we ready to fund a nature-positive future? As COP16 unfolds, UN Secretary-General António Guterres delivers a stark truth: “We are waging a war against [nature]…where there can be no winner.” With a $700 billion annual funding gap for biodiversity and ecosystem restoration, recent pledges like the $163 million for the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund represent just a small step.    I4N is tackling this funding gap head-on. As an accelerator of nature-positive solutions, our mission is to unite corporations, investors, and innovators who can mobilize the capital needed to fuel meaningful change. Thrilled to have joined the conversations at COP16 in Cali with incredible people! "It's hard to take action on nature and biodiversity because there's no way to measure it" If this is still your view on measuring biodiversity impact, then I strongly suggest you read this article from HackSummit detailing 120 incredible solutions for exactly this problem. But is this smorgasbord of solutions actually making it harder to choose? With a list of 120 solution providers, and up to 2000 different metrics possible, it can be a bit like staring at menu the size of a phonebook and deciding what to have for dinner. There's not just one choice to make. But these are metrics to measure and monitor nature, nature itself is diverse and complicated, this is at the core of its flexibility and resilience. And just like businesses and restoration projects can have thousands of different types of positive (and negative) impacts on nature, we will always need to look at these impacts from a diversity of angles and metrics. But the choice of metric and MRV solution shouldn't be producing a state of analysis paralysis and delaying actions which we so desperately need. Frameworks like TFND provide clear guidance to assess materiality and take the first steps. Most crucial however, is to take those steps. We've already run out of time for so many species on this planet, we need to go beyond only measurement to taking "no regret" actions to improve the state of nature immediately.
