#Methane: A Ticking Time Bomb for Australian Investors 💣 Methane is one of the most potent greenhouse gases, and its impact is being underestimated by many of Australia’s leading #oil, #gas, and #coal companies. As the energy and resources sectors face mounting pressure to address climate risks, methane #emissions remain a significant threat. This report from analysts Anne-Louise Knight, Andrew Gorringe, Joshua Runciman and Kevin Morrison sheds light on the critical need for action. Key Insights: 🔸 Lack of Abatement: Many companies have not implemented sufficient measures to reduce methane emissions. Instead, they’re relying on carbon credits to meet their climate targets. This exposes them to rising risks as carbon prices increase. 🔸 Economic Opportunity: Abating methane could bring financial benefits for companies. With mature, cost-effective technologies already available, capturing methane and reducing emissions makes economic sense. 🔸 Investment Risk: Companies without clear methane reduction targets face high exposure to regulatory, reporting and emissions-related risks. Companies like Santos, Woodside, BHP and Whitehaven have significant expansion plans that could increase their methane emissions, which could cost them millions in the future. The European Commission’s recent Action Plan for Affordable Energy proposes exploring the “Japanese model” of liquefied natural gas (LNG) investment, which would encourage direct overseas investment in #LNG export projects and joint purchasing by European importers. However, Japan’s LNG #investment approach is highly complex and costly, involving substantial public support and numerous players throughout the entire LNG value chain, says IEEFA’s Sam Reynolds and Christopher Doleman in a new commentary. According to them, as Japan’s LNG demand declines, Japanese companies are investing in new supply while developing trading capabilities. Reselling excess LNG requires expertise in marketing, shipping, and downstream segments of the supply chain and exposes companies to uncertain cashflows compared to regulated returns in #Japan’s domestic market. “#Europe may face even more significant challenges in marketing LNG overseas as its own demand falls, given the costs and complexities involved in Japan’s full value chain approach. Fresh analysis has shown that the projected shortfall in domestic gas markets could easily be met by diverting uncontracted gas back to the domestic market, driving down costs for Australian households and businesses. Counterintuitively, the US exit from global energy transition partnerships might in fact “boost efforts to rapidly scale up renewable energy capacity,” writes Grant Hauber. Why? The US is the world’s largest #LNG exporter. So its departure from the partnerships this month might reduce “emphasis on a perceived need for imported gas as a ‘transition fuel’ from coal,” Hauber wrote. The Just Energy Transition Partnerships (#JETP) are a collaboration between richer nations to help developing countries transition from coal to cleaner energy.
