About us
Everything the Institute for Nonviolence Chicago does is focused on ending the cycle of gun violence. We work in areas of Chicago where gun violence is highest, and we deploy evidence-based strategies that have worked in Boston, New York, L.A., and other cities. We aim to help individuals who are most likely to carry a gun or get shot lead lives of nonviolence, foster healing, and actively promote peace. Our robust continuum of care is designed to help participants regulate emotions, restore mental health, and obtain living-wage jobs in the legal economy. Dr. King’s vision guides our hearts, and his teachings inform our efforts. Practicing King’s philosophy provides us with the tools to earn trust and calm conflict. It offers Chicago a courageous approach to healing by addressing trauma at its root causes. This affords us the opportunity to build a sustainable peace, rather than shift the violence to another neighborhood or to the prison system.

👑 ❤️ ✌🏽 #BelovedCommunity
This weekend, I had the privilege of attending the Institute for Nonviolence Chicago’s #MLK Celebration, where we honored Susan Lee for her more than 25 years of tireless work building nonviolent and peaceful communities in Los Angeles and Chicago. It was a powerful event filled with reflections on what it takes to create safer, more equitable communities for all. Susan was joined by an incredible panel of changemakers: Dr. Selwyn O. Rogers Jr. from University of Chicago's Trauma Center, Marcus Simpson, Lead Outreach Coordinator at INVC, and Dr. Laurence Ralph, Director of Princeton University’s Center of Transnational Policing and an author/filmmaker whose work amplifies the fight for justice. Their collective wisdom and insights deepened the dialogue on violence prevention, community healing, and systemic change—what an inspiration! I was also grateful to connect with old friends, partners, and changemakers, including Arne Duncan from Chicago CRED, as well as Joseph Mapp, the City of Chicago’s new Director of Education and Reentry. A special thank you to Teny Gross, whose leadership at INVC continues to shine as a beacon of hope and action for Chicago’s communities. I brought my daughter along, hoping to instill in her an even deeper understanding of the work I’m privileged to lead at Cara Chicago—work that centers on breaking down barriers to employment and building pathways of hope for those we serve. #MLKDay #Nonviolence #CommunityImpact #LetsGetToWork

Most gun violence is not random. It can be traced much like a disease moves through a population. Thanks to network science and our partners at Northwestern University's The Center for Neighborhood Engaged Research & Science, CVIs are able to dramatically reduce gun violence in Chicago. They help us identify those most at risk and then help us evaluate our services to improve our success rate. Andrew V.
