Yesterday, IAM Lab’s Executive Director, Susan Magsamen, had the opportunity to speak with thousands of members of the international neuroscience community about neuroarts and neuroaesthetics during the Society for Neuroscience's 2024 Conference. Her dialogue with SfN President Marina Picciotto opened the conference and serves as a testament to how far the field has come. We are undergoing a systems change by marrying the arts and sciences, opening a new landscape of possibilities for human flourishing and well-being. Research is foundational for the field-building of neuroarts, and the field is ripe for investigators to explore mechanisms, pathology models, saliency, the DMN, and more. She brought music and dance to the stage by inviting Davin Youngs and Friends and the Jonas Friddle Trio to guide the audience in song, dance, and playing kazoos—novel sensory stimuli for a neuroscience conference! Thank you to the Neuroarts Blueprint and all our other key partners for driving the field forward. For #Superhuman Day, let's celebrate the fascinating phenomenon of #pareidolia as an unacknowledged superpower. Pareidolia is the phenomenon of seeing familiar patterns such as faces and objects in nature, or even hearing distinct sounds in ambiguous noises. It is rooted in cognitive processes that have played an important role in human evolution – the ability to detect faces and emotions quickly. Creative individuals that experience vivid mental imagery and possess high trait absorption and openness to experience are more likely to experience pareidolia. Pat Bernstein, friend and supporter of IAM Lab, possesses this superpower and helped make our pareidolia research possible. Her book, exhibit and website, Blink to See, promote the benefits of the pareidolia instinct in schools, museums, and hospitals. We all need to feel like we belong and experience a sense of social connection to be healthy. In 2023, Dr. Vivek Murthy, the U.S. Surgeon General, identified an epidemic of loneliness, highlighting the severe health consequences that arise from a lack of human connection. At Rikers Island, the Art in Medicine department of NYC Health + Hospitals, operated by Correctional Health Services, is leading the way in utilizing the arts as an essential tool to combat loneliness, enhance well-being, and foster community among incarcerated people—both during their time at Rikers and after their release. “One of the best ways to address [loneliness] is being connected to others and doing activities together and hearing beautiful poetry and music and the arts,” says Trinder, assistant vice president of the Arts in Medicine department at the New York City essential hospital system. “All of the things that bring us joy in life are things that make us healthier.” Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gKg6_mBh

A new study from the EpiArts Lab, co-authored by Jameel Arts & Health Lab Affiliate Researchers Daisy Fancourt and Jill Sonke, highlights the positive impact of frequent hobby engagement on reducing substance use in adolescence. Early adolescents who engaged in hobbies had 28% lower odds of marijuana use and were less likely to binge drink. 📊🔬 Explore the full findings here: https://lnkd.in/d6Df5ZPF NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development CULTURUNNERS WHO Regional Office for Europe World Health Organization Community Jameel Social Biobehavioural Research Group Jill Sonke #DaisyFancourt University of Florida - Center for Arts in Medicine #artsandhealth #research #youthmentalhealth #artsinresearch #artsinpublichealth #artsandwellbeing #artsandculture #ArtsHealth #artsinhealth #mentalhealth #harmreduction #substanceuse #EpiArtsLab #hobbies #creativity #hobby

World-renowned soprano Renée Fleming is featured in a new Brain & Life Magazine article and podcast, where she discusses the power of music to transform our nervous system, promote health, reduce anxiety, and enhance social cohesion. The article and podcast explore the history of music therapy, highlighting research that demonstrates the symptom-reducing effects of music and expressive arts therapies on conditions like Alzheimer's, dementia, traumatic brain injury, PTSD, and other cognitive and physical ailments. It also touches on how singing may even improve cardiovascular health, balance, posture, and reduce the risk of falling. Fleming is a leading advocate for research into the connection between the arts and health. She helped spearhead the collaboration between the The National Institutes of Health (NIH), The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and National Endowment for the Arts to create the Sound Health Network research initiative. This spring, she published her bestselling book Music and Mind, a collection of essays by acclaimed scientists, artists, creative therapists, educators, and physicians.
