About us

ICMM's vision is a safe, just and sustainable world enabled by responsibly produced minerals and metals. Each of our company members – which together account for one-third of the global mining and metals industry – commits to implementing our Mining Principles as a condition of membership. These principles are neither static nor do they represent the ceiling of our ambition. We are always challenging ourselves to go ever further in setting the highest of standards for responsible mining, and delivery. We promise to work collaboratively with associations and other stakeholders to enhance the contribution of mining and metals to sustainable development. Our commitment to working with others does not stop at our industry’s boundaries. We were founded on a spirit of open engagement, and we continue to champion diversity of opinions today to deliver bold leadership for our wider industry and non-resources sectors alike.

🎙️ ICMM CEO Rohitesh Dhawan on The Times’ World in 10 Podcast   Critical minerals are at the heart of a global power shift. As nations race to secure these essential resources, the stakes for diplomacy, security, and the future of mining have never been higher.   We’re pleased to share that ICMM CEO Rohitesh Dhawan has featured on The Times’ World in 10 podcast, offering expert insights into the growing geopolitical significance of regions rich in critical minerals.   In the episode, Ro highlights the need for responsible mining practices, emphasising meaningful partnerships with local communities—ensuring that the benefits of mining are shared equitably while maintaining the highest standards of sustainability.   He also addresses recent shifts in U.S. anti-bribery rules and the potential risks they pose to the sector globally: “Responsible companies will not change course because, ultimately, it is not in their interest to do so.”   Tune in for insights on this critical issue: https://lnkd.in/e9DxXv3z

🌍 Making responsible mining the norm At UNECE Resource Management Week 2025, ICMM CEO Rohitesh Dhawan called for bold, collective action to scale responsible mining from a few hundred sites to tens of thousands worldwide. “We stand on the brink of a once-in-a-generation opportunity—to reshape mining’s future with a consolidated global mining Standard that’s practical, inclusive, and effective for all miners, regardless of size, commodity, or geography.” Today, ICMM’s 24 company members commit to high standards of responsible mining across 650 sites, but globally, an estimated 25,000 companies operate 30,000 sites to no responsible mining standard. To close this gap, ICMM, World Gold Council, The Copper Mark, and Mining Association of Canada are co-developing the Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative—a unified framework to raise the bar across the industry. Covering 24 Performance Areas—the Standard offers a practical pathway for universal improvement, including for those taking their first step toward responsible mining. 🔗 Learn more about how we’re making responsible mining the norm—not the exception: https://lnkd.in/ejTFZMXj

"This is a significant milestone for the CMSI, reinforcing its commitment to transparency and collaboration in shaping a strong, credible mining standard. Alongside the widespread support for many aspects of the Standard, governance and assurance, we've also received great ideas for improvement which we will work hard to incorporate as best as possible" - Rohitesh Dhawan, President and CEO, ICMM Today, CMSI published its first Consultation Report, summarising the feedback received during the initial public consultation on the draft Standard and oversight system. For full transparency, all verbatim submissions (where consent was given) are available to view. The detailed feedback will inform updates, which will be shared for a second round of public consultation later this year. This process reflects the partners' shared commitment to collaboration, transparency, and continuous improvement in developing a widely supported industry framework. The health of nature and the state of our climate are deeply interconnected. Rising global temperatures are intensifying extreme weather events, putting immense pressure on both our planet and its freshwater resources—70% of which are stored in glaciers and ice sheets. At the same time, deforestation and biodiversity loss are weakening nature’s ability to regulate the climate.  To address these challenges, ICMM is supporting an integrated approach to accelerate decarbonisation across the mining and metals industry and its value chains, while also working to achieve a nature positive future.  Learn more about our decarbonisation work here: https://lnkd.in/eFVP3VVk #WorldWaterDay

🌍 A mine’s true legacy begins at closure Too often, mine planning focuses heavily on the short window of active extraction - yet it’s what happens after production ends that can provide an opportunity to create lasting social, economic and environmental benefits. Dr. Emma Gagen and Dr. Sally Innis, PhD's article, published in the Global Mining Review, explores why the closure of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) - often the most complex and enduring elements of mine infrastructure - must be integrated into closure planning from day one. Last month, ICMM updated its tailings management and integrated mine closure guidance to improve how mining companies plan and manage the closure of tailings storage facilities. 📘 Read the full blog here: https://lnkd.in/eV4MJZdW

ICMM’s President and CEO, Rohitesh Dhawan Dhawan, joined a timely and insightful discussion on critical minerals and geopolitics at Chatham House yesterday. Ro highlighted how politics and critical minerals will shape the world in the years ahead, stressing the vital role of high operating standards in ensuring a fair and sustainable future for all stakeholders. "Businesses can’t succeed when societies fail," he cautioned, underscoring the need for equitable partnerships with host communities. When managed responsibly, mining companies can deliver significant returns—both for investors and for the communities they serve. 🌱🦜Nature is being lost at an unprecedented rate. Mining operations often intersect with areas of high biodiversity value and have historically played a significant role in environmental degradation. But the industry is also dependent on the essential services provided by healthy ecosystems — such as reliable access to clean water, erosion prevention, and flood control protecting. Therefore, conserving nature is not just a responsibility — it is a business imperative. By working to achieve no net loss or net gain of biodiversity at operations our industry helps to mitigate our environmental impact and forms the foundation of our contribution to the wellbeing of ecosystems and the local communities who rely on nature. This is why, ICMM has published new guidance that aims to help mining and metals companies achieve and maintain no net loss of biodiversity at their operations, and ultimately strive for net gain of biodiversity, as they work towards a nature positive future. 🔓Unlocking Resources, Securing Supply Chains: ICMM at Giga Europe Yesterday at GIGAEurope, ICMM’s Policy & Public Affairs Lead, John C. H. Lindberg FRSA, joined a panel discussion on how Europe can unlock resources and build secure, sustainable supply chains. John highlighted that the growing focus on critical minerals – in an era of great geopolitical volatility - presents a vital opportunity for the industry to engage with policymakers and key stakeholders on the sector’s realities. However, he cautioned that “this poses significant challenges for the clean energy transition,” from financing and permitting to the lack of globally standardised responsible mining practices. 🥊These challenges are not a reason to step back—they are a call to take action. By tackling them collectively, the mining industry can drive a transition that is both timely and sustainable. #ResponsibleMining #CriticalMinerals #EnergyTransition #GigaEurope
