This year's #Alabama legislative session focused on a series of bills dubbed "Working for Alabama" creates many new options for Alabama businesses and their owners. Carl Jamison hosts two policy advocates for our community to discuss the most impactful legislative wins for Alabama businesses. Much of the discussion is about the "Working for Alabama" bundle of bills which addresses many issues, including education, child care and workforce housing. As a business owner in Alabama, you should be aware of these economic development changes as they are many different tax credits for your company. It also creates the Alabama Growth Alliance, a public corporation that will provide input and support on economic development, such as increasing private investment in the state and promoting opportunities for minority-owned businesses. Huge thank you to Kyle South of the The Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama and Clay Scofield of Business Council of Alabama. They did a great job explaining the what's and why's for each new bill. Don't forget to rate, review and subscribe to the podcast! 😁 https://lnkd.in/dACCfxSM

Dear Clients and Friends: The end of the year is often an optimal time for tax planning, but you must be careful to avoid potential pitfalls along the way. Notably, any year-end tax strategies you implement should take all the latest tax developments into account. Congress has enacted significant tax legislation in recent years, beginning with the massive Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017. Many provisions in the TCJA are effective for 2018 through 2025. Soon after, the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act was signed into law, designed primarily to enhance retirement savings. During the height of pandemic, a trio of laws—the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, the Consolidated Appropriations Act (CAA) and the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA)—provided various forms of tax relief. Another law passed in the summer of 2022, the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), created both new opportunities and obstacles for certain individuals and business entities. Finally, late in 2022, the law dubbed “SECURE 2.0” built on the foundation of the initial SECURE Act while also adding several new layers. Keeping all those laws in mind, we have prepared the following 2023 Year-End Tax Letter. For your convenience, the letter is divided into four sections: * Individual Tax Planning * Business Tax Planning * Financial Tax Planning * State Tax Planning Be aware that the concepts discussed in this letter are intended to provide only a general overview of year-end tax planning. It is recommended that you review your personal situation with a tax professional. https://lnkd.in/e3eGj9_C

Partner and State and Local Tax (SALT) Attorney

Do you or your clients sell or lease tangible personal property subject to AL sales, seller's use or rental tax to entities or organizations that are exempt from the tax either because it's a wholesale sale or they are statutorily exempt? And remember, under AL law, having 501(c)(3) status doesn't automatically qualify you as a sales tax-exempt entity. On 10/31, AL DOR issued a timely reminder that, for the protection of both seller/lessor and buyer/lessee, the latter must renew annually their TAX ACCOUNT LICENSE between now and Dec. 31- PERIOD. It's not a painful process (visit AL DOR's website) but we have seen very little grace extended by either AL DOR or self-administered local governments to the hapless client who in good faith sold goods to a buyer holding an expired license. Please warn your sales tax people/clients of this potentially costly foot-fault!

If there is one question we get more than any other it's, "How do I lower my taxes?" So, we did a #podcast on that exact topic. This week's episode focuses on maximizing #tax deductions, which can potentially lower your tax bill. The topics include recent rule changes for meals and entertainment, dues, and automobile deductions. We also explore employing your children as a business owner, pass through entity taxes, and #costsegregation studies. Listen to the smooth sounds of Kim Smith and Bobby Bragg, and who knows, you might end up with a few more dollars in your pocket. 😁 https://lnkd.in/guJMeypK

Thanks to Alabama Act 2023-554 in the last legislative session, Alabama will start reducing the state’s portion of sales tax on food/groceries (“grocery tax”) on September 1, 2023 from 4% to 3%. In September 2024, the state’s portion will go from 3% to 2%, assuming the ETF grows by more than 3.5%. In total, that will cut the state’s share from 4 to 2% which is expected to save Alabama taxpayers over $300 million annually. https://lnkd.in/gGQ7TMAb
