Since May, our incredible Houston Argonauts have been hard at work developing their Design Thinking Presentations.🌐 In an intense and enriching "speed mentoring" session, the Argonaut teams had the unique opportunity to work with esteemed university professors, graduate students, and a JASON Argonaut Alumni. Each team presented its Goal Hacker solution, received invaluable feedback, and rotated through four different mentors for diverse perspectives. After these rapid 15-minute sessions, each team had an extended 45-minute session with one mentor to refine their projects and presentation skills, all in preparation for their final presentation before an audience of about 25 people. The Houston JASON Argonauts are currently immersed in an exciting expedition focused on "Goal Hacking." The students and teacher Argos had to find ways to support organizations in achieving their goals. One key partner in this effort is the Galveston Bay Foundation, which is dedicated to preserving the Galveston Bay ecosystem. Before arriving in Houston, the Argonauts watched videos from the Foundation, learning about their mission and how they hoped to collaborate. This week, they had the chance to dive deeper. A staff member from the Foundation gave a presentation on their innovative oyster shell recycling program, explaining its role in supporting bay health and reducing erosion.🦪 The Argonauts then traveled to Galveston Bay, where they helped bag oyster shells for restoration projects and explored the bay's ecosystem through seine fishing. The day wrapped up with a visit to Tommy's Restaurant, where owner Tom Tollett, who has been actively involved in oyster shell recycling, showed the Argonauts the behind-the-sciences process of how the shells are processed to rebuild reef habitats to protect marine life and to ensure a healthy supply of oysters for future generations. Earlier this week, the Argonauts visited the Limitless Space Institute and heard from the brilliant Dr. Harold White!🌌 Dr. White, renowned for his pioneering work in advanced propulsion systems, shared fascinating insights into the future of space travel. From exploring alternatives beyond rocket fuel, nuclear fission, and fusion to the mind-blowing concept of warping space for interstellar journeys (like something straight out of Star Trek), what he and others are trying to figure out is mind-blowing!🪐 Following his inspiring presentation, our Argonauts participated in an exciting challenge-based activity led by the amazing Chaka Jaliwa, Deputy of Education and Operations at Limitless Space. We're proud to support STEM organizations aligned with our values and partner with schools that recognize the importance of STEM education. In June, we attended the C-STEM breakfast, led by Dr. Reagan Flowers, focusing on the State of #STEM over the program's 22-year history. C-STEM's mission to inspire future innovators through hands-on projects tackling real-world problems resonates deeply with us. It cultivates confidence and mastery in Communication, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Our partnerships with C-STEM and JASON Learning reflect our dedication to the community and the next generation. Through collaborations like these, we've sponsored local teachers, providing a ready-to-use recycling-based STEM curriculum at Lawson Middle School. Last fall, we had the privilege of touring students engaged in Jason’s Learning Argonaut program, experiencing hands-on STEM learning firsthand. As a team that values experiential learning, we're grateful for partnerships that empower us to bridge the gap for students accessing STEM education. Our new group of Argonauts is in Houston, TX, for the "Houston GoalHackers" design thinking expedition! Yesterday, they had the amazing opportunity to hear from Monica Lee, a NASA scientist and the Assistant Vice President of Cybersecurity Enablement at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. Monica’s background is nothing short of inspiring. She was the Chief of Staff at Johnson Space Center, becoming the third highest-ranking woman there. She’s logged over 3,000 hours in NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Mission Control Center, working on the International Space Station, and has managed space contracts worth over $4.4 billion! 🚀 Plus, she’s a published research scientist with works featured at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian.
