New Lewis blog post: Oregon Humane Society’s New Road Ahead turns two years old! In October 2022, Lewis completed the New Road Ahead facility in Northeast Portland. This expansion signified more than just a new chapter for the Oregon Humane Society (OHS)—it was a tangible step forward in the region’s approach to animal welfare, community support and justice. The facility provides accessible, affordable veterinary care and has already given nearly $2 million in subsidized services, and helps over 79 families each week keep their pets healthy and happy. The forensic center is working with law enforcement to bring justice to neglected and abused animals, making our community safer for everyone. We are proud to have played a role in this facility's community transformation. The New Road Ahead facility is a testament to the power of thoughtful, community-focused construction. Thank you, OHS, for trusting us to deliver and for all the fantastic work you are doing to create a more humane Portland!

Last week, a volunteer crew from Lewis joined forces with Sawhorse Revolution staff to install cedar tongue-and-groove siding at Cherry Street Farm, where a future demonstration kitchen is taking shape. Once complete, this kitchen will support a 320-square-foot hydroponic growing lab for vegetables operated by Hip Hop is Green, all on a 5,000-square-foot residential lot in Seattle’s Central District. Here, local youth will gain hands-on experience learning how to grow and prepare food from farm to table. The aim is creating healthier communities by promoting culturally relevant eating to Black, Indigenous, and other youth of color ages 12 to 20. It's always a joy to team up with Sawhorse Revolution, a key Lewis Foundation partner, which empowers teens by teaching them carpentry and architecture.

Last week, crews completed the final concrete deck pour on Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc.' 11-story 701 Dexter! Other milestones are fast approaching on this ZGF Architects-designed project in Seattle's South Lake Union, including the arrival of a WOHR bike safe carousel—an automatic parking system for bikes—and the delivery of the first 44 tons of structural steel. 701 Dexter is slated for substantial completion this summer. 📷: Tim Rice

When the State of Oregon acquired a 175,000-square-foot mixed manufacturing warehouse in Wilsonville, the vision was to reposition the existing concrete tilt-up warehouse into a space capable of supporting modern research labs, office space and a resilient emergency center. Since opening to multiple state agencies last year, the SERA Architects-designed North Valley Complex has become a showcase for how owners can breathe new life into well-positioned but underutilized industrial buildings. https://lnkd.in/gSe3k3rr

We’re thrilled to share that Senior Project Executive Christine Zinkgraf will receive a 2024 Women of Vision Award from the Daily Journal of Commerce Oregon! This award honors Christine’s remarkable contributions to shaping the built environment with her technical expertise, leadership, mentorship and commitment to community service. With over 22 years in the industry, Christine has had an extraordinary journey, starting in college, where she designed fire protection systems part-time, to now serving Lewis as a leader in Portland. Her leadership at Lewis has been instrumental in supporting many high-profile projects, such as the ZoomInfo tenant improvement—the largest TI project in the Portland metro area—and the Adventist Health electrical infrastructure upgrade, enhancing the hospital's resiliency. Christine is also a passionate mentor, helping the next generation of women in construction thrive. She advocates for improved parental leave policies and actively supports organizations like Girls Can Build and CREW Portland, shaping the future of our industry. We are so proud of Christine for this well-deserved recognition! Her dedication to mentorship, community involvement and forward-thinking leadership has made a lasting impact on both our company and the industry as a whole. Congratulations, Christine!

In a new Q&A with the Portland Business Journal this week, Lewis CEO Bart Ricketts shares insights on the state of Oregon’s commercial construction market. Despite some headwinds, Bart highlights how Lewis has adapted by focusing on existing clients, expanding into newer markets like data centers and healthcare, and going further afield into Central Oregon and Southwest Washington. Bart remains optimistic about an overall rebound, and despite its significant challenges, the future of downtown Portland. https://bizj.us/1qlzym
