Founder-CEOs vs. Non-Founder-CEOs: It's not what you think. Paul Graham's post on 'founder mode' last week and Pitchbook's data showing that founder-CEOs create value at 22.4% velocity, compared to 4.7% for non-founder-CEOs, confirms there's a there here. But I don't think it's about founders vs. managers. I think it's about authenticity and vision. Founder-CEOs are the ultimate embodiment of the purest iteration of the mission and values of the company. They lead with a deep sense of purpose, will not let anyone stand in the way of that, and this creates authenticity resonates throughout the organization. Think about it. It's not just about hitting KPIs, but about making a mark on the world. This results in higher engagement, innovation, and ultimately, value creation. Example: A manager might focus on quarterly sales, whereas a founder believes so much in their product that the quarterly sales goals, although important, is just one milemarker on the road ahead to their product changing the world. The key takeaway? All leaders should drink from the firehose of authenticity and vision offered by their founder ( that is, if they are still around!). And, if the found is not around. Then the management team is obligated to spend far more time and effort owning and holding the company accountable to the mission, vision, and values of the company. Agree?
