Today marked a major milestone and one of the highlights of my career. Lighthouse Public Affairs had the privilege of supporting San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity in their pursuit to provide affordable homeownership opportunities in the El Sereno community. The history of the 710 freeway, and freeways in general, is full of stories of displacement, segregation by design, and air pollution that severely impacts communities. But today, the first portion of the El Sereno Rezone passed through the LA City Planning and Land Use Committee. Soon, SGV Habitat for Humanity will be handing over keys to families who might otherwise never have had the chance to own a home in this incredible city. The job is not finished, and I hope that ultimately the community plan creates the opportunity for as much affordable housing as possible. But today we have much to celebrate! Crankstart is excited to release a groundbreaking study that seeks to revolutionize how we address homelessness. Our report shares novel research that helps to untangle the maze of public contracting and understand how and when people enter and exit homelessness. It includes 12 recommendations for City Leaders to implement to make homelessness rare, brief, and a one-time event. San Francisco can be a leader in solving this issue. Please look at the report at streetstostability.com and share it widely. Thanks to our amazing partners for their work on this!

Very exciting news! Governor Newsom has signed SB 1297, allowing Malibu to pilot Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) on PCH—a pivotal moment for me. Having taught in Malibu, I’ve witnessed firsthand the tragic accidents on this road, and those experiences fueled my commitment to road safety advocacy. Lighthouse Public Affairs client Blue Line Solutions partnered with Move LA, Streets For All, Streets Are For Everyone (SAFE) and families affected by PCH tragedies to help pass this bill. While this is a crucial step, it’s just the beginning. We must continue pushing for statewide ASE legalization to reduce vehicular violence and protect citizen privacy. “The signing of SB 1297 is a huge win for Malibu’s safety,” said Senator Ben Allen. "Speed cameras will help curb reckless speeding on this dangerous stretch of highway, and I’m grateful to the Governor for recognizing their life-saving potential." Being an alum of the Mayor’s Office is kind of like being in the Navy. You never know where you are going to run into a former colleague. Today it was a luminary like Kelli Bernard at the #LACruiseAlliance lunch! Just like Greater Los Angeles Scouting and our ongoing effort to work with the Port of LA and realize a new lease for our Scout Camp at Cabrillo Beach, the LA Cruise Alliance is working with the port to lease and build a state of the art cruise ship terminal. Thanks Hon. Joe Buscaino for today’s invite.

Fantastic work! Congratulations, Marian Lee! 🎉
Electrified Caltrain is officially here… celebrating yesterday and seeing all of the riders warmed my heart…especially the families with little ones…they were the people I visualized during challenging public meetings and days when I thought we were chasing a pipe dream. Feeling proud, grateful, and blessed. Thank you Caltrain for getting this project done. A special thank you to Seamus Murphy and Stacy Cocke for being SOLID when life was rough. ❤️

Crucial reporting by Liam Dillon sheds light on the complexities and imperatives of advocating for affordable homeownership—a cause we should all champion. At Lighthouse Public Affairs, we are proud to represent Habitat for Humanity California, San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity, and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles in their shared and individual missions to expand affordable homeownership opportunities in our state. Truly an honor and a privilege to work alongside SGV Habitat for Humanity our efforts to bring affordable homeownership to Los Angeles in El Sereno. The journey has been long, intricate, and, at times, deeply emotional, but the impact of helping families achieve the dream of homeownership is extremely worthwhile. Many are tirelessly working to make homeownership more accessible and equitable for all, recognizing that few things provide the same level of stability and security. El Sereno is on the verge of transformation, and once we reach that milestone, it will be nothing short of a sea change.
