In the face of ongoing literacy challenges in the state of Massachusetts, we're proud to share some remarkable achievements from our students in Framingham. Through our high-impact, one-to-one tutoring format, we've seen incredible results: almost all of our students in Framingham showed some growth, with 86% of students demonstrating one or more years of reading growth. These outcomes highlight the powerful impact of targeted, individualized literacy support for our young learners. We're committed to continuing this vital work to ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive. #literacymatters #educationsuccess #literations

Empowering Young Readers
About us
Literations is a nonprofit literacy organization dedicated to improving the reading skills of K-3rd grade students in under-resourced communities of Greater Boston. Our intergenerational model, pairing caring, highly-trained older adult volunteers with young students, is key to achieving our positive outcomes. For over 20 years, we have made a difference in young lives. From the start, our mission has always been to help young students become literacy proficient. We believe children have the most to gain from achieving literacy proficiency by fourth grade, to be confident learners, and equipped for lifelong success. We are poised to meet the need for increased 1:1 literacy support in the Greater Boston area.

The Foundation, in partnership with Literations and Jewish Family Service of MetroWest, is actively working on tackling literacy disparities faced by students in underserved communities through our Equity in Education Action Project. Literations pairs highly-trained volunteer literacy coaches (aged 50+) with 1st-4th graders to deliver evidence-based, one-to-one literacy interventions. Over the past three years, this program has been rolled out in 5 schools across Framingham. By investing in these solutions, the Equity in Education Action Project not only increases our education system’s ability to address gaps in student success and promote equity amongst students, but it will also lead to stronger academic performance, higher graduation rates, and more post-education opportunities for young people. This program ultimately fosters a more equitable society for all members of the community. Join us in celebrating our investment in the future at the Community Leadership Reception, October 10 at the Residence Inn, Natick from 4:30-6:30pm. For tickets, visit https://lnkd.in/eN_QF3un

Our Executive Director Wes Enicks offers an important perspective on the literacy crisis in Massachusetts, highlighted in yesterday’s Boston Globe Media article on MCAS scores. With only 42% of students meeting expectations, it's clear that students in this community need our help. Literations plays a vital role by providing one-on-one literacy coaching to students in high-need districts.
Yesterday's Boston Globe article on MCAS scores paints a sobering picture of Massachusetts' literacy landscape. With only 42% of students meeting expectations and nearly 40,000 more failing English tests compared to 2019, it's clear that our education system faces a crisis that demands immediate attention and innovative solutions. While evidence-based teaching methods are crucial, they alone cannot solve this problem. We need a holistic, community-driven approach. Organizations like Literations offer a vital complement to classroom instruction by providing one-on-one literacy coaching and mentoring to students in high-need districts. Our program pairs older-adult volunteers with 1st-4th graders, fostering relationships that build confidence and accelerate literacy progress. This personalized attention is especially critical in districts with high populations of low-income students, English learners, and students of color, where performance lags significantly behind state averages. To truly move the needle on literacy achievement, we must embrace an all-hands-on-deck strategy. This includes supporting organizations like Literations, Boston Partners in Education, 826 Boston, and Reach Out and Read (to name just a few), as well as advocating for state funding of high-dosage tutoring programs. Teachers cannot shoulder this burden alone; it's time for policymakers, community members, and educational nonprofits to unite in tackling this crisis. By combining structured teaching approaches with the power of mentorship and individualized support, we can help our students regain lost ground and build a stronger foundation for their future success.

This year, 94% of our volunteers indicated that they would like to return in the 2024-2025 school year. Our program staff provide the consistent support to our volunteers that is needed to make them feel both fulfilled and empowered to make a lasting impact on the students they work with. It is because of this support that so many return each year, ready to make an impact. And it's thanks to friends like you that we are able to support our volunteers so fully.
