How long is the ideal intake call with a hiring manager? Darren Bush says an hour. Why? You need time to truly understand: - the role - what skills it requires - the nuances of it, how someone would settle into it, and what the candidate should expect - what the hiring manager is like and what kinds of candidates they're looking for Selling hiring teams on long intake calls can be challenging — but it's important to stress the fact that more info upfront means soooo much time saved in the long-run.

Are you tracking how long you've last spoken to your applicants? Check out my interview with Sam Kuehnle from Loxo. Candidates in your "maybe" pile for a specific role can go weeks without hearing from you. In the current job market, sharing a nugget of information (good or bad) can be the kindest thing you do. How long are you leaving candidates hanging? Are you tracking how long candidates go without hearing from you? On a theoretical and emotional level, we all KNOW that candidate experience matters. But practically speaking, it's often an area that suffers in light of other priorities. Candidates in your "maybe" pile for a specific role can go weeks without hearing from you. And in the current job market, sharing a nugget of information (whether good or bad), can be the kindest thing you do. Darren Bush wants to see the market move toward more candidate communication — and we agree!!

It probably won't surprise you that the subject line of your email (especially cold email) can make or break your response rates. But with more and more people browsing their inboxes on their phones, your subject line becomes even MORE important... Specifically the first 5 words of your subject line. Take a look at your inbox right now — likely, after the first ~5 words, the subject line of your emails is getting cut off. Which means that if those 5 or so words don't catch your eye, they're likely not going to get opened. As much as you can communicate WHY someone should click to open your email (amidst the sea of others in their inbox) in those first 5 letters, the more likely your email is to get opened. It's that simple.

Is there a particular bit on sales calls (or even candidate calls) where you tend to get tongue-tied? A common objection that you always struggle against? William Burry of VXT has a simple but game-changing tip: PRACTICE. With colleagues. With yourself in the mirror. In the shower. To your pet. Go over that specific moment/objection/roadblock again, and again, and again. Until it feels entirely natural to navigate it when it comes up in calls.

When your content does some of the heavy lifting for you, you don't have to come into a first sales call at ground zero. Rather than explaining what you do, you start from a place where the person on the other end of the call can say: "You're definitely the people who can help us with X." When there's already a level of trust, credibility, and familiarity going into that first call, the entire sales process moves differently. The conversations shift from selling from scratch to expanding on the value you can provide. Megan Bowen dives into this deeper on a recent episode of our podcast — link is in the comments!

A lot of the pushback regarding AI in recruitment is that it makes things "less human." In certain cases, WE TOTALLY AGREE. There's a time and a place for automation. But when it comes to communicating updates with candidates — like about their application status, or whether or not they're moving forward in the interview process, or about timelines — using automation can actually help infuse MORE humanity into your process. Because what could be more human than demonstrating empathy and kindness to candidates who are just waiting for more information? Even when we use automation to help us do activities like this at scale, we're doing it for the sake of being more human. More kind. More empathetic. More communicative. Thoughts?

When someone views your profile, do you view that as an opportunity to start a conversation? Morgan J Ingram thinks you should. Someone viewing your profile is a signal — one that indicates that, at the very least, their interest is piqued. So following up on that interest with a question or an invitation to learn more is kind of the most natural next step... Yet so few people are doing this that it's still a REALLY great way to stand out.

There are so many shiny new objects and "must-do" tactics that pop up every few months. But Morgan J Ingram says to never forget about what's ALREADY WORKING for you. Always double-down on whatever is working best for you. What works for one may not work for all. We've all got out own secret sauce. If you're killing it with a certain tactic or channel, STICK WITH IT until you reach the point of diminishing returns!
