About us

M13 is an early-stage (seed and Series A) venture capital firm that invests in visionary founders building disruptive software businesses. Established in 2016 with offices in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York, we are a full-stack partner that brings a deep bench of full-time operators to help founders outperform and build category-defining companies. Our Propulsion model helps founders execute faster and with less capital towards better outcomes, with 3x people on our Propulsion team for every one investing team member. Our portfolio includes more than 200 direct investments, with 25 exits to date. M13 has seeded seven companies and been in the Series A of five others that went on to achieve unicorn status. Messier 13 (or M13) is one of the brightest star clusters in the northern sky. It’s full of remarkable individual stars, but when those stars come together, they create something that’s truly greater than the sum of its parts—inspiring the M13 philosophy of “brighter together.” We’re proud that M13 has been awarded as a Built In Best Place to Work in both LA and NYC multiple years running.

How can startups build effective tech partnerships as public servants? "You have to meet any market where it’s at. Sometimes having 10x better technology alone isn’t enough," says Prepared founder Michael Chime. At our annual Future Perfect conference, Michael discussed removing blocks to innovation as founders working with public entities—and why for Prepared, finding success was about more than just offering better technology. “It’ll be a time saver, but most of all, it’s a lifesaver.”  M13 portfolio company Prepared is using AI to make emergency situations safer for both 911 callers and responders. Its Prepared Assist technology is bringing built-for-landlines 911 infrastructure into the future, giving dispatchers real-time GPS information, audio transcription, and other vital data to make it easier to assess and respond to emergency situations. According to one 911 Systems Manager, “What Prepared Assist has done is essentially take all those [different] tools and bring them into one platform. In previous times, we would have to look at three or four different screens to be able to accomplish these types of tasks.” Learn more at https://lnkd.in/e4kTG-YN #AI #safetytech Michael Chime, Dylan Gleicher, Neal Soni

🚨 Big news: Apple is leveraging assistive-AI platform Prepared to bring 911 call processing into a safer future. Prepared’s life-saving 911 technology is becoming available to all iPhone users, allowing callers in emergency situations to share crucial information—including live video, photos, text, and location data—with emergency response teams. With the release of iOS 18 this fall, 911 dispatchers empowered by Prepared technology will be able see exactly what iPhone users see at emergency scenes in real-time with Emergency SOS Live Video. In other words: 150 million US iPhone users will be protected by technology that makes emergency situations safer both for callers and first responders. Congratulations to co-founders Michael Chime, Dylan Gleicher, Neal Soni, and the whole Prepared team on this huge milestone! Learn more at: https://lnkd.in/ez-B3YCX

To get callers the help they need, you have to meet them where they are. Today, we're proud to announce that 911 callers using Apple iPhone® can share live video directly with ECCs through a native integration with Prepared. This integration will make it easier than ever before for callers to show exactly what's happening on-scene. Since launch in fall 2021, Prepared has seen video-to-911 prove lifesaving in our nationwide partner agencies time and time again. From stranded free climbers to cardiac arrests to volcano response, the ability to gain instant eyes-on-scene drives more efficient and effective emergency response. What opportunities can hype cycles bring? Union Square Ventures co-founder Brad Burnham shared what he’s learned from decades of venture investing in conversation with M13 Partner Latif Peracha at this year's Future Perfect. A few highlights: 1. Hype cycles bring innovation opportunities: "Without that financial bubble, without that enthusiasm, you don't get the experiments that you need in order to put the infrastructure in place to build real systems,” Brad says. "[At USV] we made the argument that we were through the initial crash of the information technology hype cycle, and that we were going to be building now into what Carlota Perez called the deployment period. That’s when a lot of the technologies that were first introduced in the crash actually became important." 2. Adaptability is key: "It's our job to figure out how to live with these new problems. It's not the job of the technology or the market to make it easy for us,” says Brad.  3. Focus on implications: Both investors encouraged looking at the implications of a technology, not just the technology itself. Thinking beyond the infrastructure or core technical pieces brings a huge number of meaningful opportunities. At the end of last year, M13 Partner and Head of Product Rob Smith predicted that M&A—and specifically AI acquihires—would pick up in 2024. "As AI talent needs skyrocket and supply lags, acquihires for good AI teams will start to happen more frequently and competitively. This mirrors the acquihire booms that followed approximately 1–3 years after rises in machine learning and mobile apps during their ensuing talent shortages," he said. Business Insider recently reported that "M&A dealmaking among AI startups is already off to a strong start this year, with 55 exits recorded in Q1 of 2024, per Crunchbase data." M13 portfolio company Form Health just raised a new round of financing as they continue providing best-in-class virtual care for patients with obesity. Congrats to Evan Richardson, Florencia Halperin, and the whole team! We’re proud to be an early investor in your company. When we first invested in Form three years ago, we knew that we were in the early innings of a transformation in obesity medicine and that Form was at the forefront of an approach that would transform lives with improved health. Based on the sustained results of their early patients, we believed the company would become a leader in obesity care with results not only for patients but also physician specialists and insurance companies as we move to a value-based healthcare system. Fast forward to today, where Form has delivered long-lasting results for many patients with industry-leading science-based obesity care and developed strategic relationships with employers and pharma companies like Eli Lilly and Company. NBA all-star Shane Battier is regarded as one of the most successful—if unusual—basketball players in history. His strengths aren't captured by traditional basketball metrics, but his presence on a team made them significantly more successful overall. At our annual Future Perfect conference, Shane joined M13 Partner & Co-founder Carter Reum to talk about leadership, teamwork, and his unique approach to winning. One piece of advice that stood out to us: embrace unseen, unsexy contributions. Winning teams win as a team—not as individuals. It’s important to acknowledge that some of the most important work may not be immediately visible or celebrated. “Kobe Bryant is the toughest competitor I’ve ever had to guard against. But even the great Kobe Bryant had strengths and weaknesses,” says Shane. “I knew when Kobe Bryant went to his right hand, he had a 62% shot of scoring. (That’s legendary, by the way—that’s what makes him one of the greatest players of all time.) But if I sent him to his left hand, and I kept him from the basket, it was only a 42% shot.” “You don’t have to be a math major from MIT to know that if I’m guarding Kobe, I’d rather him have the 42% chance of success than the 62%.” Armed with this data, Shane memorized every spot on the basketball court where he could get that edge. “And so even though I wasn’t sexy, I couldn’t jump, I was slow, I didn’t score—I still knew how to create value on every single space on the floor,” he concludes. “That’s why when I was on the floor, my teams magically played better.” Get more of the top lessons—for business and for life—from their conversation at https://lnkd.in/eAjminmv #leadership #teamwork #datadriven
