#GloucesterMA’s connection to the ocean runs deep. That was apparent during my visit to the city last week with Rep. Ann-Margaret Ferrante, Sen. Bruce Tarr, and Mayor Greg Verga. We visited the Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI) on Main Street, an inspiring #nonprofit organization working at the intersection of #climatetech and #bluetech. Launched in 2013, GMGI is focused on unlocking the power of environmental DNA (eDNA) to understand the challenges facing the marine ecosystem and promote the sustainable use of ocean resources. Did you know that you could understand the population of marine species using a seawater sample that contains the DNA they shed as they pass by? It was amazing to learn about what is possible from the GMGI team! We also toured the Gloucester Biotechnology Academy and spoke with current students and alums about the impact this innovative program has had on their lives and careers. Special thanks to GMGI Executive Director Christine Bolzan, GMGI Chief Scientific Officer Andy Gardner and GMGU Research Scientist Tim O’Donnell for the informative tour! #CapeAnn #eDNA
