Making reforestation scalable.

About us

Mast Reforestation is a climate tech company with a mission to make reforestation scalable. As bigger, hotter, and more frequent fires increasingly destroy forested land each year, Mast facilitates faster, more resilient forest regeneration. Mast provides vertically integrated reforestation services to get forest restoration projects up and running in weeks, not years. Services include seed collection, seedling cultivation, site preparation, seedling hand planting, aerial drone-based seeding, and ongoing site monitoring. To fund its projects and open new revenue streams for landowners, Mast sells carbon removal credits that allow companies seeking positive climate action to invest in reforestation projects for 200 years or more. Mast’s investors include Alexis Ohanian’s Seven Seven Six, Social Capital, DBL Partners, Marc Benioff’s TIME Ventures, Elemental Excelerator, and more. To learn more, visit MastReforest.com.

🌲Why the big smile, Julian? Our cone scouting team spotted this sugar pine cone near the Miracle Mile in Northern California’s Klamath National Forest. This area is one of the most diverse conifer forests in the world, boasting 18 different species within a single square mile. While we don’t collect sugar pine due to the challenge of testing for blister rust resistance, we couldn’t resist sharing. ✨Here’s to the wonders of nature that dwarf our imaginations.

📝New research in Nature Portfolio suggests that trees are even better at sequestering atmospheric greenhouse gasses than we previously thought! Here’s how 👉 Scientists discovered that in addition to trees sequestering carbon dioxide via photosynthesis, microbes in tree bark absorb atmospheric methane. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, responsible for 30% of global warming since the pre-industrial era. These findings underscore the importance of investing in nature-based solutions to mitigate the worst effects of climate change. Mixed species reforestation – planting a diverse array of native tree species – is essential for forest health and ecosystem resilience. Mixed stands of Ponderosa pine, sugar pine, Douglas fir, and more, offer unique benefits that single-species plantations do not. Mixed stands are known to: ➡ Strengthen pest and disease resistance ➡ Improve soil quality ➡ Provide habitat for native species  ➡ Reduce management costs once established Shown above: Ponderosa pine (in planting bag) & Douglas fir (planted) seedlings #mastreforestation #forestrestoration #forestresilience

🎉Exciting news! Join us in welcoming our new Carbon Market Partnerships Director, Brady Paron. Brady joins us with over 8 years of impactful experience from Shopify, where he worked with 30+ carbon removal suppliers globally, led climate programs that removed 18,000+ tonnes of CO2 (the same as taking ~4,000 cars off the road for a year), and wrote and led the development of many of their sustainability and climate reports. We are excited to have him on board! Thanks to GeekWire for the mention in Tech Moves (check out the article in the comments )

This summer, we’ve been asking volunteers to visit national forests and scout for closed female cones as part of our Reforestation project. Curious to know what happens once we get your surveys of closed female cones? 🧐 Swipe to see! 🧗♀️Our partners at Mast Reforestation climb those trees and collect the cones - sometimes to astounding heights! The cones are then processed to collect the seeds inside them and used to grow new seedlings at a nursery. Once the seedlings reach maturity, they’re planted in forests that need more trees. Want to help reforestation experts know which trees to climb? There’s still time to get involved! We have about a week left of the project and some great prizes in store. Everyone who submits 20 surveys will receive a $100 REI gift card, and the volunteers from California and Montana who collect the most surveys (50 minimum) will win a pair of custom Adventure Scientists Peak Skis! 🔗 Check the link to learn more and sign up. https://lnkd.in/gJi9H8xS 📸 Mast Reforestation

The Plumas National Forest in northern CA was historically managed for timber, leading to forest structures and densities that were not optimized for ecosystem health. This left the region primed to burn when the North Complex Fire—one of the largest in California history—blazed through. That’s why our work at Feather River Dome is so important. By restoring a forest that is better adapted to future fire and climate impacts, we’re protecting habitat for native species and sequestering carbon for an estimated 200+ years. Learn about our project and how you can support our efforts to restore resilient forests. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dWFiRa43 #mastreforestation #forestrestoration #forestresilience

Mast Reforestation is focused on replanting wildfire burned lands. 🔥 🌲 🤔 Why? From Lydia DePillis at The New York Times earlier this year: "Overcrowded by decades of fire suppression, dried out by drought and weakened by beetle infestations, forests now burn rapidly and so intensely that their natural ability to regenerate is vastly diminished." 📰 For those of you curious to read more, the article gives an overview of Mast Reforestation's work, including work to address supply chain issues through vertical integration. 🌱 🌲 Take a read. 👀 Or listen (less than 20 minutes). 🎧 -- #MastReforestation #ClimateTech #Wildfires #CarbonRemoval https://lnkd.in/giSMZtbB

A recent study published in Nature Portfolio found that global wildfire severity and frequency has more than doubled in the past 20 years. Six of the worst fire seasons have occurred in the past seven years. These findings make resilient reforestation that much more important. At Mast, we are focused on bringing back forests to be more resilient in the face of future fires, droughts, and other climate disturbances.
