About us

POWERED BY POSSIBLE The world is more fragile than ever. Food shortages have left millions of people hungry, while violent conflict has sent millions on the run. From poverty and malnutrition to natural disasters and climate change, it’s easy to see a world of insurmountable challenges. Instead, we see an opportunity to create transformative change. We see the world differently. In crisis, we believe in the power of human potential. In struggle, we believe in the ability of communities to grow stronger. So we act differently. We understand that communities are the best agents of their own change and local markets are the best engines of long-term recovery. In more than 40 countries, we partner to put bold solutions into action, helping people triumph over adversity and grow stronger from within. For the refugee who dreams of rebuilding her country, for the mother who wants a healthy future for her children — for millions of people filled with the power of possibility —Mercy Corps connects people to the resources they need to build better, stronger lives. We create transformative change. Mercy Corps has responded to nearly every global emergency over the past 20 years. Since 1979, we have provided $3.7 billion in lifesaving assistance throughout the world. Each year we infuse millions of dollars into local economies through small business loans and grants to provide livelihoods for the world’s most vulnerable people. We are empowering more than 100,000 youth trapped by violent conflict to overcome the profound stress of war and become change makers in their communities. We are powered by the belief that a better world is possible. Join us.

It was great to meet so many of you in The #Netherlands at our Local Power, Global Impact: Advancing Climate Resilience event, ahead of #COP29. If you weren't able to make it, here's what you missed: 🔊 Dahabo Shalle, CEO of the Rights Organization for Advocacy and Development (ROAD), described the negative impacts the #ClimateCrisis is already having on the environment, rural economies and livelihoods in Northern Kenya. Her insights into how INGOs and donors can better support locally led climate initiatives like hers included longer-term funding, greater co-creation, and anticipatory action to ensure initiatives can respond early when disaster strikes. She emphasized that communities must have their voices heard and be integral to governance structures in order to support peace and foster lasting resilience. 🤝 Haileselassie Medhin, Director of Programmes – People at IKEA Foundation stressed the importance of building the right ecosystem of philanthropy, highlighting that "We [Foundations] need to stay small and nimble. It’s not just about shifting funding from big partners to small; it’s about how the partnership is designed.” 🌿 Ivo Demmers, Executive Director at the Netherlands Food Partnership shared that effective partnerships begin with a clear shared goal, saying, “Partnerships start with ‘What do we want to achieve?’ and a local roadmap.” He shared his experience of working in partnership not only with civil society, but also with the private sector, financial institutions, local government, and farmers, to ensure systemic change. The need to channel funding, resources and decision-making toward locally driven #adaptation efforts has never been more critical. Mercy Corps’ ambitious Climate: Possible initiative is dedicated to investing $250 million to bolster community-led resilience worldwide.  🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ey3-KRc5 #ClimatePossible #ClimateResilience

COP29 Azerbaijan has been dubbed 'the Finance COP' because the new climate finance goal - the New Collective Quantified Goal - is the big decision item. "Failing to deliver the necessary finance at COP would not only stall climate action but also leave vulnerable women, men and children in developing countries footing the bill.” says Debbie Hillier from Mercy Corps. Could you tell these flowers aren’t real?🌸😮 They’re actually made of repurposed plastic and handcrafted by Jenny in Dili, #Timor-Leste! Jenny and her sisters grew up making paper flowers, but they started to see orders flood in after transitioning to using plastics and posting pictures of their crafts on social media. Her family received two grants from Mercy Corps’ Hamenus Lixu Plástiku program to purchase needed materials and equipment to get their business rolling. Now, Jenny can’t wait to see their business grow. “I feel proud to see a paper turn into a flower. Then from a plastic...Our mom used to motivate us to create things. If we can’t make it, we encourage each other.”🙌

This week I joined Jamie McGoldrick on the Humanitarian Fault Lines podcast, presented by the Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs, where we discuss some of the biggest humanitarian crises of our time—from Gaza to Sudan to Haiti—and the major challenges facing humanitarian organizations within a global system struggling to keep up with growing needs. With funding shortfalls, donor fatigue, and shrinking assistance budgets, the obstacles are steep, but the need for coordinated action has never been greater. In our conversation, I share a message of both urgency and optimism. Urgency in resisting forces of isolation and retrenchment that threaten to undo the global cooperation that has driven so much progress in recent decades, and taking urgent action together as a global community to ensure our shared future. And optimism that in the face of mounting and compounding threats, particularly the climate crisis and increasing conflict, we can make progress happen. While these threats are daunting, they also present opportunities to innovate, adapt, and strengthen our approaches to addressing global needs. Every day, I see evidence of this progress through the incredible impact my Mercy Corps colleagues and other organizations are having around the world. 🚨We cannot be clearer: #Sudan is experiencing a starvation crisis of historic proportions. And yet, the silence from the international community is deafening. This inaction has left millions at risk as each passing day pushes more lives toward a tragic end. It is our shared duty to demand increased funding and protection for the people of Sudan as this brutal conflict rages on. #KeepEyesonSudan

Unlock Aid's new report, Glassdoor for Primes, highlights the experiences of local organizations, social enterprises, private sector actors, and grassroots groups in their work with INGOs and prime contractors, with valuable and actionable insights for international development organizations looking to expand and deepen equitable local partnerships.  I’m proud that Mercy Corps ranks highly as a recommended prime contracting organization and received strong scores for transparency and communication. This reflects intentional efforts to transform our organization and our commitment to intentionally shift power, resources, and decision-making to the communities where we work. By embracing our Locally Led Commitment, we are making meaningful strides toward building inclusive and resilient communities where local stakeholders lead humanitarian and development efforts. Our goal is to ensure that international organizations are responsive and accountable to the needs and voices of communities. This report highlights a reality we all recognize – there's still significant work to do to enhance transparency, equity, and communication in our sector. Thank you, Unlock Aid, for amplifying these local voices. Their insights are vital for helping our organization and others build stronger, trusting, and equitable relationships to partner better to help communities thrive.
