“So, what do you do?” It’s a question we all get asked, but for Meridianites it’s a question without an easy answer. Every project at Meridian is unique, and while we believe there’s strength in our unique approach to the work, it also makes it hard to sum up what we do in an elevator pitch (especially if that elevator is only going a couple of floors!). We often say, “We are a mission-driven, nonprofit consultancy,” but what does that mean? To us, it means we’re committed to helping our partners improve lives, the environment, and the economy. For over 25 years, individuals, businesses, government entities, NGOs, and more have relied on us to help them tackle complex environmental and social issues. We bring a fresh approach to our partnerships—whether we’re providing strategic advice, incubating a new organization, facilitating contentious dialogue, or designing a multi-year collaborative. We co-create spaces where participants feel heard and invested in finding solutions and crafting a shared vision. It's amazing to come across this story that started with the work Daniela Restrepo Ortiz and our team at IDEO did in collaboration with The Rockefeller Foundation, Thought For Food, EAT, and Meridian Institute to bring people from around the world together alongside the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit. I was blown away by the projects submitted from all over the world back then and even more happy to see what's come from the network since then. I will be following LIFT and their work with local and indigenous communities!

What began as a seed of an idea during the Food Systems Game Changers Lab in 2021 has now flourished into a thriving movement. Deeply rooted in sharing indigenous knowledge and championing community-led approaches, we’re transforming our food systems—on land and in water. Hosting fellow founding members of the Local and Indigenous Food Systems Transformation Network (LIFT) for our first in-person convening in Kenya was truly special. We reflected on two years of impactful work with local and Indigenous communities around the world— Meli Bees Network in Brazil, Village Farmers Initiative in Nigeria, Prairie Food System Vision Network in Canada, FRIEND in Fiji, and Oceans Alive in Kenya. Together, we charted the course for LIFT's future while experiencing the beauty of Kenya: spending time with giraffes at the Vipingo Ridge Wildlife Sanctuary, planting Sukuma Wiki with the Naimani Women’s Group, and even restoring coral at the Kuruwitu Marine Sanctuary. This event marks the beginning of what I hope will be a ripple effect across our food systems. A heartfelt thank you to John de la Parra, The Rockefeller Foundation and Pawanka Fund for believing in and supporting our vision. High-quality blue carbon projects reliably sequester carbon, restore and conserve ecosystems and open pathways for local and indigenous communities to be involved in, and benefit from, national initiatives. The Blue Carbon Action Partnership (BCAP) follows the High-Quality Principles and Guidance, which was co-developed developed in partnership with the World Economic Forum's Friends of Ocean Action, Conservation International, Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance (ORRAA), Salesforce, The Nature Conservancy, with Meridian Institute as a delivery partner. Investing in resilient agricultural systems can mitigate so many risks to communities by improving water quality and quantity, biodiversity, resilience to climate change and extreme weather events, and enhancing community financial and ecological resilience more broadly. “It is the long history of humankind (and animal kind, too) that those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed.” - Charles Darwin Last week, over 50 leaders from 18 partner organizations came together for our annual 1000L co-design workshop with the auspicious goal of charting a path forward for a new season of action. Over four days, participants worked tirelessly to tackle big questions, explore new opportunities, and create ambitious pathways for bringing integrative, collaborative land management approaches to landscape partnerships worldwide. This work, by its nature, requires deep collaboration and improvisation. It's an honor to have so many partners walking and working alongside us.
