I started my career with Jacobs in early September 2023. A year has now passed, and I have already been exposed to a wide range of civil engineering projects - but this current role will be hard to beat! Since March of this year, I have had the privilege to be seconded to Balfour Beatty, contributing towards the offshore works at Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station. As a Shift Geologist, I am working across three tunnels located under the Bristol channel, assisting the successful excavation of six adits using sprayed concrete lining (SCL) and back mining techniques. When operational, these tunnels will provide the circulation of water used to cool the nuclear reactors. My daily tasks include geological/geotechnical face mapping, rock bolt pull testing, supervising and recording probe hole drilling works, providing quality geotechnical records and more. Daily, I collaborate with workers across Balfour Beatty, Jacobs, BeMo and NNB (EDF New Nuclear Build). This role has allowed me to advance my understanding and experiences with tunnelling and underground excavations, something I have greatly enjoyed so far. It has been a fantastic seven months. I look forward to the remainder of the secondment, and seeing where this experience takes me.
