We recently had a conversation with Jeffrey Lyons from Gatewise. Humans are decent at recognizing patterns. For example, a sales rep might notice that sending emails on Wednesday mornings gets more responses than Friday afternoons (obviously). But machine learning models are much better at it. They have the benefit of being able to ingest and analyze an ocean of data — for example, all the cold emails your team has ever sent — in a short amount of time. Plus, they always apply the same level of attention to each data point, unlike a human who might be too drained to think about why their last batch of emails flunked. This email ended up in Rita Melkonian’s SPAM folder. Why? ❌ The email is an overwhelming 260 words. ❌ There are FIVE hyperlinks included (prob the main reason why). ❌ The sheer volume of first-person pronouns—“I,” “Me,” “We”—is wild (21 instances, yes we counted). ❌ The call to action (if you can find it) is aggressive af. How do you avoid being spammy? ✅ Write short emails. ✅ Try not to include hyperlinks in cold emails (or no more than one). ✅ The focus should be THEM, not YOU. ✅ Your CTA should require zero effort from the recipient (polls can help).
