  • Dikembe Mutombo, NBA Global Ambassador and Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer, passed away this week at the age of 58. Mutombo was truly larger than life. On the court, he was one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players in NBA history. His infectious smile, deep booming voice, and signature finger wag endeared him to basketball fans of every generation. Off the floor, he poured his heart and soul into helping others. As a humanitarian, Mutombo was dedicated to making a meaningful impact on communities, especially in his native Democratic Republic of the Congo and across the continent of Africa. Dikembe’s indomitable spirit lives on in those he helped and inspired throughout his extraordinary life. He will be remembered not just for his achievements in basketball, but for the profound impact he made in the world.

  • Last week, New York Knicks legend Earl “The Pearl” Monroe and award-winning filmmaker Dan Klores invited faculty, students, families and other special guests to the historic groundbreaking of the Earl Monroe New Renaissance Basketball School’s new, state-of-the-art campus in the South Bronx.   Founded in 2021, the Earl Monroe New Renaissance Basketball School is the first of its kind in the nation: a purpose-built, specialized high school with an academic curriculum entirely designed around basketball and the many career paths associated with the global game, including broadcast media, sports psychology, law, nutrition, facilities management and venture capital. The Earl Monroe New Renaissance Basketball School is the only school in the country in which students major in one of 16 professions of the game off the court. The school is a co-ed, charter, tuition-free high school serving 400 students, all from the Bronx.   Speakers at the groundbreaking included NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau, Knicks All-Star forward Julius Randle, Knicks legend Walt Frazier and former National Basketball Players Association Executive Director Michele Roberts.
