About us

At the National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC) we are champions for children and work to strengthen the global response to child abuse. We do this in two ways, by serving the children and families of Madison County, Alabama, and by training child abuse response professionals around the world. Created in 1985, under the leadership of former Congressman and District Attorney, Bud Cramer, we are the first Children’s Advocacy Center in the world and have served as a model for the thousands of Children’s Advocacy Centers and Barnahus throughout the world. The CAC model coordinates the multidisciplinary response to child abuse allegations bringing together professionals from law enforcement, social services, mental health, and medical fields to ensure that every child receives comprehensive support and care. Through our innovative programs, training initiatives, and advocacy efforts, we strive to prevent child abuse, empower survivors, and educate communities. We believe that every child deserves to grow up in a nurturing environment free from violence and fear, and we work tirelessly to make this vision a reality. Join us in our mission to create a world where all children are safe, valued, and able to thrive. Together, we can make a profound and lasting impact on the lives of countless children and families.

  • NCAC hosted a delegation from the Japanese Ministry of Justice on September 4-5. During their visit, they learned about our mission and operations to support the multidisciplinary response to child abuse. This delegation has a keen interest in supporting the development of Children’s Advocacy Centers in Japan, and we are excited to support their efforts! Satsuki Miyaji, Takafumi Ikawa, Kiyoshiro Ohashi, Shuji Yamamoto, Kei Koide, Koji Matsuoka, Daisuke Kobayashi, and Hinako Osumi met with NCAC CEO Chris Newlin, Director of Forensic Interview Training and Services Linda Cordisco Steele, Dr. Mark Sapp, Assistant District Attorney Anna Stinson, Judge Karen Hall, and Judge Alison Austin during the visit. We are especially grateful for Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle, the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber, Toyota North America, and Mazda Toyota Manufacturing in helping us welcome our guests. We're thrilled to partner with the Ministry of Japan to achieve our mission of championing and strengthening the global response to child abuse – and look forward to future collaboration!

  • NCAC CEO Chris Newlin recently attended the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect Congress in Uppsala, Sweden, where 700+ attendees from more than 70 countries gathered. Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden delivered a keynote, emphasizing the vital work of CACs and Barnahus. This opportunity also allowed us to connect with others working around the world to implement the multidisciplinary response to child abuse. For context, over the past sixteen years, this conference has grown from two presentations about the multidisciplinary response to child abuse to dozens of presentations—including a half-day pre-conference workshop led by Newlin and other colleagues. We would like to thank everyone doing the critically important work to champion and strengthen the global response to child abuse. It takes us all.

This year's ISPCAN features a number of sessions related to Barnahus, CACs, and interagency ways of working for child victims of violence. Yesterday's pr-conference session looked at the development and implementation of Barnahus and Child Advocacy Center (CAC) models, with a focus on the state of the art in research, standards, and accreditation. It also featured a peek into how the the Barnahus Quality Standards are applied at three of our founding members: Iceland, Sweden, and Slovenia. • NCAC Forensic Interviewer and Trainer, Kim Madden, and CEO, Chris Newlin, provided two weeks of training for staff of the Philippines National Police Women’s and Children Protection Center (WCPC). This training is a huge step in expanding the high quality forensic interviewing and supporting the multidisciplinary response throughout the Philippines—protecting kids, providing services, and holding offenders accountable. We commend Brigadier General Portia Manalad, Director of the WCPC, and her deeply committed staff for their dedication to children throughout the Philippines, and we look forward to an ongoing and strong alliance to provide kids with the protections they deserve.

  • "Standing beside and slightly behind her father on a rainy Monday morning, 17-year-old Joanie waited somewhat impatiently as the receptionist opened the door to the Team building on NCAC’s campus. When Joanie’s mom arrived, she and her husband flanked Joanie in a physical, emotional, and symbolic fashion – they were here to protect their daughter, to be her fiercest advocates, and to stand by her in these uncharted waters."
