The Hal Bruno Comfort Zone Kids Camp is named after the late Chair of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) Board of Directors. Bruno was a fierce advocate for the families of fallen firefighters – and the camp established in his name offers an invaluable experience for children who have lost a loved one in the line of duty. The Kids Camp is not just a typical summer camp but a blend of traditional camp activities with specialized programs to address the emotional needs of grieving children. The NFFF’s partnership with the nonprofit organization Comfort Zone Camp is instrumental in developing this unique and meaningful programming. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation expresses our sincere gratitude to the U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate, and the White House for their combined efforts that resulted in Tuesday’s signing into law of the Fire Grants and Safety Act (S.870). This achievement also culminates two years of advocacy by the Congressional Fire Services Institute (CFSI), its National Advisory Committee members, leaders of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus and committees of jurisdiction, other members of Congress, and fire departments and citizens across the United States. The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant programs deliver crucial federal support to fire departments across the nation. This critical funding helps to keep our nation’s communities—and the firefighters who protect them—safe. #firehero #fireservice #firedepartment

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) has joined other major fire service groups in opposing the efforts in some jurisdictions to reduce the numberof required exit stairwells and permit a single means of egress in multifamily buildings up to six stories. Current model codes require at least two means of egress in residential occupancies above three stories. Several states have used—or are in the process of using—legislation to supersede the model safety codes, thus placing occupants and firefighters at greater risk of injury and death. “The practice of a jurisdiction opting out of a portion of a code is not just a matter of choice, it’s a decision that nullifies the whole process—and endangers the public and those who are responsible for responding to fires and other life safety hazards,” said Victor Stagnaro, NFFF’s CEO. “Codes are created with multiple factors in mind as part of a larger system to protect the public. When legislators opt out of one portion of the code, it affects other systems in an occupancy and endangers everyone who works, lives, and otherwise occupies the affected building. This should raise concern about the potential risks.” The NFFF urges state legislatures to reject efforts to circumvent the model code process and strongly supports that the established egress requirements be maintained.
