Did you see NIF's VP for Public Engagement, Libby Lenkinski, speak on Al Jazeera Media Network this week? She talked about the Israeli mass protests that are spanning political lines as people unite to demand a hostage deal, now.

The leading organization advancing and protecting liberal democracy in Israel.
About us
The New Israel Fund (NIF) is the leading organization advancing democracy and equality for all Israelis. We believe that Israel can live up to its founders’ vision of a state that ensures complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants, without regard to religion, race, gender or national identity. Widely credited with building Israel’s progressive civil society from scratch, we have provided over $200 million to more than 800 cutting-edge organizations since our inception. And we are more than a funder; NIF is at philanthropy’s cutting edge thanks in large part to Shatil, the New Israel Fund Initiative for Social Change. Shatil provides NIF grantees and other social change organizations with hands-on assistance, including training, resources and workshops on various aspects of nonprofit management. Today, NIF/ Shatil is a leading advocate for democratic values, builds coalitions, empowers activists and often takes the initiative in setting the public agenda. Our values drive our work. We fight inequality, injustice and extremism because we understand that justice is the precondition for a successful democracy — and the only lasting road to peace. The New Israel Fund’s founders wanted to connect with Israel in a way that reflected their progressive values, and thousands of Israelis and Diaspora Jews have joined with us for that reason. Our supporters love Israel, and see it clearly as striving for an ideal not yet attained.

“This year, let our Passover Sedarim be transformative, not performative. When we say ‘let all who are hungry come and eat,’ let’s mean it. As we sit at seder, with our hearts broken, maybe even with empty chairs at the table to symbolically remember our captives and their dear, shattered families, we must not ignore that Gaza is on the verge of famine. The people of Gaza today are scavenging for grass and animal feed, and that is a moral catastrophe.” Rabbi Sharon Brous; NIF International Council, Founding Member & Senior Rabbi of IKAR NIF is working through World Central Kitchen and International Rescue Committee—two organizations which have spent the last six months working at tremendous risk to bring aid into Gaza and feed the starving population. Give today at nif.org/gazaaid to help get food aid to the hundreds of thousands of civilians facing famine in Gaza.

Dr. Yasmeen Abu Fraiha is a Bedouin, a Palestinian citizen of Israel, and on October 7, she was in an emergency room in Be'er Sheva, treating victims of Hamas' attack. She shared with us at our Guardian of Democracy event this past Sunday, that working side-by-side with other medical professionals who span the gamut of Israeli identities—secular and religious Jews, Bedouins and settlers, medical students and retired doctors—she came to a profound realization:

Food is a fundamental right. That’s why NIF is raising urgent funds to provide humanitarian aid through World Central Kitchen and International Rescue Committee for people in Gaza who are suffering and starving. Although humaniatrian aid is not our primary strategy for change, we stepped in to help Israeli families who were displaced, grieving, and who had family members taken hostage in the brutal attack. We provided support for basic needs, needs that the government should have met; but in those terrible days, far too often, the government was nowhere to be found. Now we know that in this moment, we simply cannot ignore the ignore the desperation and suffering of civilians in Gaza today. Give today at nif.org/gazaaid and we will direct 100% of funds raised to organizations doing humanitarian aid work in Gaza.

Did you see our Young Leadership & Education Coordinator, Zak Witus's piece in The Guardian? During his time in Masafer Yatta, Zak had numerous run-ins with two of the Israeli Settlers that Biden has sanctioned. He watched as they attacked Palestinians - unprovoked. He watched as Palestinian shepherds and activists pleaded for help, and the authorities either stood down or guarded the marauding settlers – to keep the settlers safe. And while the sanctions are a good first step, he argues that targeting individuals leaves in place the structures that allow Jewish Israelis to dominate Palestinians in the West Bank. For the sake of both nations who live in the land between the river and the sea, our goal should be to uproot that system of Jewish supremacy in order to sow the seeds of a shared future for all Palestinians and Israelis.
I met the Israeli settlers Biden placed sanctions on. They’re bad – but part of a rotten system | Zak Witus

New Israel Fund reposted this
What a spectacular profile of New Israel Fund's critical work as the backbone of Israeli progressive civil society in eJewishPhilanthropy by Jay Deitcher! NIF CEO Daniel Sokatch is spot-on: “Many American Jews have no interest in supporting the policies, vision and agenda of this Israeli government, which they see, quite correctly, as antithetical to their own values and vision, but who are desperately connected to and deeply concerned with the well-being of Israel and Israelis." In addition to Daniel Sokatch, I have deep respect for Jennifer Spitzer, Orli Bein, Becky Buckwald, Ephraim Pelcovits, Alex Willick, Mickey Gitzin, and so many of their colleagues. My husband and I are proud NIF supporters - we even include it in our planned giving - and I hope others join us! #israel #palestine #gaza #democracy #israelhamaswar #israelis #palestinians https://lnkd.in/gW2wm_AU
