The NYECC advocates for energy rate payers through regulatory and policy intervention.
About us
The purposes of the New York Energy Consumers Council (“NYECC”) include its continuing representation of the interests of an ever-expanding spectrum of major energy users in New York City and Westchester County, in order to realize a sustainable, environmentally responsible and equitable energy future for the region that provides for safe and reliable generation, transmission, and delivery of energy at the lowest possible price for our members. NYECC advocates for its members in regulatory, legislative, executive and judicial arenas, including, but not limited to, proceedings before the New York State Public Service Commission, the New York Independent System Operator, and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and/or such other entities as may be appropriate to advance members’ interests. NYECC’s members also benefit from up-to-date information on the evolving energy marketplace and timely communication of critical energy issues. NYECC members secure access to cutting edge energy market information through newsletters, seminars, and web meetings. In addition, members benefit from the collective strength of the organization in their individual interactions with Con Edison, the PSC, and other market participants. Without the NYECC, energy consumers would face: • reduced market choices, • diminished utility reliability, • and significantly higher energy prices Traditionally, every $1 NYECC’s members have spent collectively on intervention has helped generate bill savings of $10 or more. Ask yourself not whether you can afford NYECC membership, but whether you can afford to live in a community without the New York Energy Consumers Council.

Since Local Law 97 was adopted, we have been advocating for changes that would decarbonize buildings in a practical and reasonable manner. We share the City's goal of reducing its carbon footprint. However, by prematurely forcing buildings to electrify, cogeneration systems, that create energy using natural gas, would be penalized. As a result, carbon emissions would increase because the downstate grid has yet to add any significant renewable energy sources. The NYC Department of Buildings recently released the proposed rule package for Local Law 97 and we are pleased that the package allows cogeneration systems to be part of their comprehensive approach to reducing NYC's carbon emissions. Efficient cogeneration, including our system at One Bryant Park, creates low carbon energy and provides resiliency as the grid transitions to more renewable, clean energy sources. Thank you to the Department of Buildings, The Durst Organization Engineering & Energy Services team, REBNY (Real Estate Board of New York), New York Energy Consumers Council, and the many other partners who have been working tirelessly on these strategies to lower emissions.

Last week, members of REBNY and The Durst Organization came together to mark REBNY's new LEED Platinum certification. Over the course of an eight-month renovation and a two-year planning process, REBNY modernized its offices and achieved LEED Platinum status. CodeGreen Solutions, who led the project, helped REBNY reduce water usage by 47%, source 27% of materials from sustainable products, and divert 71% of construction waste from landfills. REBNY thanks @CodeGreen Sustainability, The Feil Organization and Durst for their instrumental support in achieving LEED Platinum certification! REBNY's Senior Vice President of Policy Zachary Schechter-Steinberg recently spoke at BE-Ex panel about the journey to reach LEED Platinum status through an eight month long office renovation. Through careful planning and support from the The Durst Organization, REBNY's office is now the only LEED Certified office space in the historic GE Building. Zach was joined by CodeGreen Sustainability and Robert Derector Associates for the panel. Thank you to Building Energy Exchange for bringing focus to the ways owners and tenants can tackle the challenge of decarbonizing office space!
