Did you know that mining copper sustainably is performed in five steps? - Blasting / hauling - Crushing - Flotation (separating minerals from the rock) - Smelting or hydrometallurgical processing - Refining for purity Great care is taken in each of these steps to ensure compliance with standards that project precious air, water and other resources.

A significant part of our work will include cleaning up and modernizing a legacy iron ore mining site to meet or exceed current environmental and safety standards. $75 million has already been set aside to ensure proper site closure and reclamation. That figure will increase by hundreds of millions of dollars when we’re in operation. And we’ve spent nearly $20 million over the past year on a massive salvage and recycle project. We’re committed to leaving the site better than we found it.

It’s always a privilege to have the opportunity to share what we do. Last Friday, we hosted University Honors Program students from the University of Minnesota at our Babbitt office as a part of their Northern Minnesota Mining class. For five days, these students have explored local geology and mineral resources, toured old and current iron mines, learned about our region's diverse communities, and can now understand the balance between the need for cleaner energy and the mineral resources to shift to cleaner initiatives.

We’re entering a new phase of work in the development of our NorthMet Project, embarking on key studies in four areas over the next year: tailings storage, water science, production capacity, and carbon reduction. We aim to assess whether new mining technology and sustainability developments can further enhance the project’s environmental safeguards and mining performance. In other words, we’re looking to see if we can make a very good project better. Our news release explains more: https://bit.ly/4clYTml Current plans already meet permitting requirements. Proposed changes may be subject to supplemental environmental review and permitting. Regardless of study outcomes, we’re committed to moving forward as an engaged community partner with a project that meets environmental performance standards and sustainable mine design standards that clean up and preserve our rivers and lakes and safeguard water quality for generations to come.

We say goodbye this week to another one of our fabulous summer interns, Carter Skelton. Carter grew up just down the road from the project in Aurora, Minnesota, and is entering his Sophomore year at the University of Minnesota Duluth where he is majoring in Civil Engineering. He also was a recipient of one of our Mining for Excellence Scholarships in 2023. “I’m a local kid who wants to stay local, and my time at NewRange was a great learning experience,” he says. “Even though my time was relatively short, I was able to experience what my career could look like on a professional level and also what it could be like working on the Iron Range.” Carter says his favorite part of the internship was the people he was able to work with who “made it easy for me to adjust and feel welcome as a team member,” adding that “it is very clear that the people here have their eyes on the prize when it comes to getting NorthMet in operation.” Yes, we are. Thanks, and good luck Carter. We’re keeping our eyes on you.
