OET is proudly partnering with the Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) for the #LebuusVoyage expeditions to explore the waters of the #PalauNationalMarineSanctuary. Together, we're bringing eleven #Palauan #researchers, #educators, cultural liaisons, and early career professionals onboard #EVNautilus for the next few weeks. PICRC works to produce high-quality and impactful research, education, and opportunities to support the stewardship of #Palau’s ocean resources. About us
The Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to exploring the ocean, seeking out new discoveries in the fields of geology, biology, maritime history, archaeology, and chemistry while pushing the boundaries of engineering, technology, education, and communications. We aim to share our story and our science with explorers via live telepresence from aboard Exploration Vessel Nautilus and around the world in order to inspire people to care about the oceans and excite the next generation of explorers. We promise to bring our audience cutting edge exploration, live from the bottom of the ocean as we explore seascapes that have never been explored before.

One of the important roles #CorpsofExploration members have onboard #EVNautilus is that of #Navigator. A navigator’s main task is to ensure Nautilus is in the correct position for scientific operations with #ROVs Hercules and Argus. The navigator acts as a communications liaison between the ROV pilots and science team in the control van and the officers of the crew standing watch on the bridge. Taking into consideration weather conditions, ship speed, and timing constraints, navigators also work closely with #seafloormappers to identify targets and build navigational plans for #multibeamsonar mapping surveys. Within the Corps of Exploration, navigators have training, degrees, and certifications in many fields including #nauticalscience, #militaryservice with an emphasis on sonar or vessel operations, #geography, geographic information systems (#GIS), #communicationtechnology, #marineoperations, #satelliteengineering, #computerscience, and #physics. Ocean Exploration Trust is excited and honored to set sail this month on a series of expeditions named #LebuusVoyage to explore #deepsea habitats within Euotelel a Klingil a Debel Belau, the #PalauNationalMarineSanctuary. The interdisciplinary expedition team onboard #EVNautilus, in partnership with the Palau International Coral Reef Center and NOAA Ocean Exploration, will spend the next three weeks gathering #seafloormapping data and exploring the #seafloor with #remotelyoperatedvehicles to illuminate #deepseahabitats around #Palau. https://lnkd.in/eJsXKt-p

OET is proud and excited to share that longtime crew member Martyna Graban sailed for the first time as #Captain of #EVNautilus during the NA166 expedition! Originally from #Gdansk, #Poland, Captain Graban joined the #CorpsofExploration in 2017 and has sailed as first officer, safety officer, and medical officer. Thanks for everything you do, and congratulations, Martyna!

One of the #CorpsofExploration members during the NA166 expedition is mapping watch lead Hayley Drennon. As a research assistant to Senior Research Scientist Dr. Vicki Ferrini, Hayley works at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory on various projects such as Global Multi-Resolution Topography (GMRT), Seabed2030, and other seafloor mapping and data initiatives. #FBF: Our #CorpsofExploration spotted a variety of #deepseafish and invertebrates while exploring a seamount in the southern region of #AmericanSamoa waters during the E Mamana Ou Gataifale II (NA165) expedition. At almost 2,000 meters deep, the team spotted a #chimera- also known as the “#ghostshark” because it’s closely related to sharks. Next, spot a #halosaur, an eel-shaped fish found only in the benthic regions of the ocean. Along the slope, the team spotted a unique-looking #tunicate (aka filter-feeding marine invertebrate) whose semi-translucent football-shaped form nearly blended in with the #seafloor. These videos remind us of the beautiful diversity found in the deep ocean of the #SouthPacific and how important it is to keep exploring in and around the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa. https://lnkd.in/eqBVd7RN
