Orange County's groundwater authority since 1933
About us
Orange County's (Calif.) Groundwater Authority Since 1933. The Orange County Water District (OCWD) manages the large groundwater basin underlying north and central Orange County that provides 85 percent of the water for 2.5 million citizens. OCWD is committed to enhancing Orange County’s groundwater quality and reliability in an environmentally friendly manner. With nearly 90 years of prudent planning and careful investment, OCWD has doubled the sustainable yield of the groundwater basin. OCWD is a special district established by the California State Legislature in 1933 and governed by a 10-member board of directors. Separate from the County of Orange, OCWD supplies water to residents in the cities of Anaheim, Buena Park, Costa Mesa, Cypress, Fountain Valley, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Irvine, La Palma, Los Alamitos, Newport Beach, Orange, Placentia, Santa Ana, Seal Beach, Stanton, Tustin, Villa Park, Westminster and Yorba Linda. OCWD had a great time participating in the “Sand Replenishment and the Business of Beaches” event hosted by UC Irvine and Assemblymember Diane Dixon. The event focused on sand replenishment, coastal resiliency and California’s economy. Executive Director of Planning and Natural Resources Lisa Haney provided a well-received presentation on OCWD sediment management initiatives in the Prado basin. OCWD board members and staff are regularly sought after to speak at meetings, conferences and events. Learn more about requesting a speaker for your event at https://lnkd.in/gkBHXZhB. 📷 from left: P. Congratulations to our Employee of the Quarter! Please join us in celebrating Environmental Specialist, John Merlo, for his outstanding contributions to OCWD. John has shown exceptional initiative in overseeing the Coastal Seawater Intrusion Monitoring Program, which manages around 300 coastal monitoring wells semi-annually. His proactive approach and mechanical skills have ensured timely and efficient completion of the program, setting a commendable standard for the Water Quality Department. #EmployeeOfTheQuarter #OCWD #TeamSpotlight

OCWD is known worldwide for our leadership, innovation and collaboration in water management. These qualities were on full display last month at Singapore International Water Week (SIWW). Not only did General Manager John Kennedy present on the District’s robust response to PFAS, he also had the opportunity to speak with Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. The two are seen here at the Lee Kwan Yew Water Prize 2024 Award Ceremony & Banquet. The District is a past recipient of this prestigious award, as shown by the display behind them.
