This fall, Operation Ukraine's fourth cohort expanded the specialties offered by welcoming two neurosurgeons and an interventional neurologist. This marks a groundbreaking expansion for the already impressive program — designed initially for facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons to undergo advanced training for treating severe war-related injuries. Dr. Andrew Jea, M.D., MBA, MHA, FACS, FAAP, has been named chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at The University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and clinical service chief at OU Health. In addition to his clinical responsibilities with OU Health, he will have educational and research responsibilities for the university, driving the academic health system’s three-part mission of clinical care, research and education.

Oklahoma Children's Hospital OU Health has become the first hospital in Oklahoma to open a pediatric heart transplant program. Recognized by Becker's Healthcare as one of the 66 notable heart centers expanding or opening in 2024, this recognition highlights the hospital’s commitment to advancing pediatric cardiology services. In 2022, the hospital expanded its pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) —the state's only unit dedicated to children with complex heart conditions. With the new heart transplant program, Oklahoma Children's Hospital now offers specialized care for pediatric heart transplant patients, addressing a critical need in the region. In a significant medical advancement for the state, Oklahoma Children’s Hospital OU Health has successfully implanted two different types of life-saving ventricular assist devices in pediatric patients, bridging an important gap for those awaiting heart transplants and broadening treatment possibilities for children in Oklahoma with heart failure. This achievement marks the first time these two devices, the Abbott HeartMate 3 Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) and a Berlin Heart GmbH, have been used to treat children in Oklahoma.
