Happy First Day of Class! We are incredibly excited to welcome ten fourth-year architecture students from Virginia Tech’s School of Architecture and Hampton University’s School of Engineering, Architecture and Aviation to our fourth year of the Center for Design Research OpenLAB Boston Studio. Across several courses, including an integrative design studio, fabrication seminar and professional practice course, the OpenLAB Boston Studio will offer the experience of working in an architecture firm and introduce students to the concept of Research as Practice. As the first new academic building on Tulane’s campus in 25 years, Paul Hall serves as the catalyst propelling collaborative theme-based and entrepreneurial research across the University. The design solution for Paul Hall floats an articulated brick volume of framed and folded apertures housing research laboratories, faculty offices and student lounges above a modestly raised podium of interconnected student and public spaces. The Farmstand at Land's Sake Farm is a net-zero hallmark of sustainability. The project works in concert to utilize a wide range of sustainable principles and practices, including shading and building orientation, timber construction, a high-performance building enclosure, ventilation and heat recovery systems and photovoltaics. Creating a diagram and building a physical model are often seen as distinct processes in architecture, each with its unique approach and purpose. In the case of White Plains Hospital, the design team sought to make a unique tool for understanding the application of interior building materials. This model blurs the boundary between diagram and model, creating an “x-ray skeleton” of the building to explore the relationships of spaces and their material palettes. The model can be stacked and unstacked, allowing one to hold each plate and get up close for better viewing from different angles, furthering understanding of relationships between key elements of design in three dimensions. #artofmaking #designalways #models #fabrication

Coming in 2025- Nashua Riverfront Screen A key piece within a broader project to turn an old industrial canal into a linear public park, this weathering-steel sculpture shields a new boardwalk from an existing electrical substation. The piece features slender, tapered spires arrayed along sweeping arcs between the substation and the water's edge. A dynamic contributor to the pedestrian experience of the riverwalk, the piece will be a defining feature of this new public amenity as viewed from the Main Street bridge and Renaissance Park.

Our new space for the Kempner Institute for the Study of Natural & Artificial Intelligence at Harvard University is home to a diverse community of affiliated students, faculty and researchers. When entering the complex, the first identifying features of the space are two curved furniture pieces – a reception desk and a bench, both custom designed and fabricated. Using the existing column as an anchor point, the bench bends twice to not only enhance the curving nature of the project but together with the reception desk, the curved angle guides the circulation path to the main entrance of the Kempner space. In honor of World Fashion Day, we’re looking back at our entries to the annual IIDA Fashion Shows. The event allow us to challenge new methods of fabrication, and practice architecture at the most intimate scale. Our beloved Pearl, a life-size elephant, and her jesters walked the runway in the 2015 IIDA Fashion Show and took home first place. A lightweight skeleton of welded steel supports a skin of vinyl flooring, cut per our files at the Johnsonsite factory with a CNC ultrasonic knife. The surfaces of the skin were unrolled and a circle-packing algorithm was used to populate the perforation pattern. By digitally simulating the assembly logic, the fabrication process was streamlined and error free. Read more: https://lnkd.in/emG2icy8
