For healthcare organizations working to become more patient-centered, it can be challenging to know where to start or what success looks like. Christina Suh MD MPH, Director of Clinical Content at Phreesia, explains how the Patient Activation Measure® (PAM®) can help healthcare organizations and providers deliver patient-centered care. We’re well into the fall, and with it, the uptick in respiratory viruses like #COVID, the #flu and #RSV. As we prepare for the season, I’ve been thinking about the major takeaways from our recent webinar "Preparing for respiratory virus season: How to educate, activate and vaccinate your patients." We were honored to have Charlene Wong of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention share important updates on the latest immunization guidance, explain new CDC tools to help providers, and introduce the Risk Less. Do More. campaign, which Phreesia is proud to support. An all-star panel — George Garrow of The Primary Health Network, James Bigham of UW School of Medicine and Public Health, and our own Christina Suh MD MPH — offered practical advice for providers to boost vaccine uptake. Four pieces stuck with me: 1) Leverage the whole care team: The medical neighborhood that stretches from receptionists to pharmacists can accomplish so much when everyone works together. 2) Lead with evidence and empathy: When providers treat the whole person, address their needs, and leave biases at the door, they send signals to their patients that they’re an advocate for their health and build their trust. 3) Meet people where they are: It’s important to remember that there are a lot of people who are not vaccine hesitant, and could be persuaded with the right messages and a little nudge, using digital tools like Phreesia’s. 4) Providers should be kind to themselves: Sometimes you can’t convince everyone, but that’s not defeat. Please get in touch if you have questions or want more information.

I am thrilled to share this interview with Paul Lovely of the CARE Center, a leader of care for LGBTQI+ people. I couldn't say it better than Paul, so I encourage you to read the full interview with Mark Hagland of Healthcare Innovation but I want to emphasize his point about how using technology, and allowing patients to self-report information, is key to improving care: "Using technology like Phreesia and pre-visit questionnaires helps patients share sensitive information. Sexual orientation, gender identity, preferred names. Also, if they’re coming for STD services or PrEP, there are sexual history questions that are important to ask, and those can be sensitive, too. So some of those elements are in the pre-visit questionnaire, so they can be completed on their phone before they get to the office. Or if they arrive here, we can give them a tablet to complete the form. And our intake people are super-sensitive and they put people at ease, but you’re right, you start with intake, and it can be awkward. And people can be more honest; and it helps with the providers’ level of comfort, especially out in the community. Some community-based providers, they’re not necessarily homophobic, but doctors generally aren’t super-comfortable or well-trained talking about sexual history questions, for example. So this way, they have that information in front of them. And everybody’s more at ease." https://lnkd.in/ec8ScbMX
