At the Kayonza-Kitumbi mine site in central #Uganda 🇺🇬 it is estimated that between 2,000-3,000 people have been engaged in small-scale gold mining here for decades, typically using toxic mercury to process their ore. The planetGOLD project in Uganda is partnering with miners at this site to help them transition to mercury-free methods and to achieve full legal recognition by the government. 📺 Learn more in this latest episode of planetGOLD's Dispatches from the Field series. The planetGOLD Uganda project is supported by the Global Environment Facility, led by the UN Environment Programme, and executed by IMPACT in partnership with National Environment Management Authority Uganda (NEMA) and the country’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (Uganda) under the Department of Mines. #ResponsibleMining #ResponsibleSourcing #ArtisanalGold #MercuryFree

Making a world of difference in artisanal and small-scale gold mining
About us
The planetGOLD programme works in partnership with governments, the private sector, and artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) communities in countries around the world to significantly improve the production practices and work environment of artisanal and small-scale miners. By working to close the financing gap, supporting formalization, raising awareness, and connecting mining communities with mercury-free technology and formal markets, the programme aims to demonstrate a pathway to cleaner and more efficient small-scale gold mining practices that benefit everyone, from mine to market. Our Mission: To make small-scale gold mining safer, cleaner, and more profitable Our Vision: A clean global supply of gold from small-scale miners ↑ For updates follow our page ↑ Supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), planetGOLD is led by the United Nations Environment Programme and implemented in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and Conservation International. The programme supports countries’ commitments under the Minamata Convention on Mercury. ↓ Learn more about us and sign up for our email list via our website ↓

In Central Uganda’s Kassanda District, the Kitumbi-Kayonza Mine Site is home to a cooperative of 30 women artisanal miners who collectively pool 5 points of gold each week. The women formed the cooperative to save and sell their gold together, realizing that selling as a group not only earns them higher profits but also helps their businesses thrive. Led by Judith, the cooperative has grown to 30 members. Judith emphasizes that the government encourages miners to unite and have a single, strong voice. #makemercuryhistory #responsiblemining #goldmining #planetGOLD https://lnkd.in/e9NfbV2A
