🌍 The 2024 Plastic Overshoot Day report is now available, revealing that plastic waste continues to rise in 2024. Key Highlights from the report:  ➡️ For 2024, Plastic Overshoot Day is projected to occur on September 5th, marking the point when plastic waste produced surpasses the planet’s waste management capacity.  ➡️ In 2024, 220 million tons of plastic waste will be created.  ➡️Nearly 70 million tons of plastic waste will be mismanaged at the end of its life, with a global average of 28 kg of plastic waste produced per capita.  ➡️ Plastic waste has risen by 7.11% since 2021.  ➡️ Countries are classified into 6 different archetypes to help readers understand how each country fits into the plastic waste management ecosystem, with associated recommendations tailored to each archetype’s unique circumstances. Today is Plastic Overshoot Day. Plastic Overshoot Day represents the point in the year when the amount of plastic waste produced globally exceeds the planet's capacity to manage it. This year it falls on September 5th. We're expected to generate 220 million ton of plastic waste in 2024 - far more than we're able to manage. The challenge is daunting: by 2040, plastic production could double, and plastic pollution is projected to triple. That would mean 'overshooting' earlier and earlier each year. But it's not too late to change this story. At rePurpose Global, we are taking the challenge head-on. In its first year Plastic Footprint Network, convened by EA - Earth Action, worked to more broadly empower global organizations to combat plastic pollution by developing a standardized methodology enterprises can use to assess the environmental impact of their plastic use.    The new Plastic Footprint assessment framework combines proven science with practitioner expertise so enterprises can more accurately and thoroughly evaluate the environmental impact of their plastic use. Over 100 professionals from 35 organizations have contributed to the effort to develop and standardize the methodology, designing 11 modules that professionals can now use to measure plastic leakage and understand where mitigation efforts should be focused.    A huge thank you to all Plastic Footprint Members, the Scientific Committee and the Working Groups who committed time and expertise to develop the assessment methodology and establish a vision for target-setting and leakage mitigation that is aligned with the UN Plastic Treaty.
