Head over to Currents, the publication of the Neurocritical Care Society, for an article by Precision Neuroscience's Dr. Benjamin Rapoport and Jackie Dister highlighting the potential of high-resolution, high channel count brain-computer interfaces to improve neurocritical care. The authors share insights from Precision’s clinical research at Mount Sinai Health System, WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, and Penn Medicine, University of Pennsylvania Health System, and describe how high-resolution electrocorticography (ECoG) “opens the door to more precise diagnostic and prognostic tools and techniques in neurocritical care.” Read more in the link below. #Electrocorticography #NeuroCriticalCare #BrainComputerInterface #NeuroTech #AIinHealthCare #Neuroscience

What does a thought look like? A video in the MIT Technology Review shows real (slowed-down) footage of the brain’s electrical activity, as recorded by Precision Neuroscience's microelectrode array. “This is basically the brain thinking,” says Dr. Benjamin Rapoport. “You’re seeing the physical manifestation of thought.” Massachusetts Institute of Technology #BrainComputerInterface Jessica Hamzelou #HealthCareInnovation #HealthTech #InnovativeCare #AI #MedicalAdvancement #NeuroTech #FutureOfHealthcare #AIinHealthCare

Precision Neuroscience’s Chief Science Officer & Co-Founder, Benjamin Rapoport, recently presented alongside Dr. Sergey Stavisky of the University of California, Davis, as part of the BCI Society’s “Industry and Academia” series. Dr. Stavisky’s presentation showcased some of the most exciting brain-computer interface work coming out of academia, by his team at UC Davis. Using existing, wired BCI implants (the Utah array), the team achieved remarkable accuracy in decoding speech from an ALS patient with severe speech deficits. The patient was able to communicate using a comprehensive vocabulary (125,000 words) only two days after his implant, and was able to use the neuroprosthesis to have natural, self-paced conversations with family, friends, healthcare professionals and colleagues. We were especially moved by footage of the patient, a man in his forties, speaking to his young daughter through the computer system. An excerpt from their conversation: How was… your day Sweet daughter of mine I have been waiting for this for a long time Dr. Rapoport’s presentation starts around the 33 minute mark. He gives a technical deep dive into the work that Precision is doing to build a next-generation version of this technology, and shares some of the early results that Precision has been seeing in the clinic. The The Wall Street Journal has a helpful visual primer on Neuralink and the other leading contenders in the brain–computer interface (BCI) space, all of whom are working to restore function for severely paralyzed people. Note that Precision Neuroscience's implant is the only one in this group that is both high-bandwidth–with 1,024 electrodes streaming realtime data from the brain–and minimally invasive. It sits on top of the brain’s cortex, causing zero damage to its delicate tissue. Synchron Paradromics Inc. Blackrock Neurotech #BrainComputerInterface

Fascinating article from the folks at NEUROTECH FUTURES, who recently sat down with Dr. Benjamin Rapoport to learn about his work as co-founder of Precision Neuroscience and his perspective on several emergent topics in BCI commercialization. Ben discusses his time at Elon Musk’s Neuralink, the reasons he left, and how those reasons became the foundation for a new brain-computer interface company, Precision Neuroscience. The article also addresses the clinical practice guidelines for brain-computer interfaces, explantation (a topic nobody in BCI talks about), and the referral pathways that will inform the patient’s journey to getting a BCI in the near future. I have the honor of announcing Dr. Craig Mermel, President and Chief Product Officer at Precision Neuroscience, as our next speaker in our conference series. Dr. Mermel earned his MD/PhD from Harvard University and is a seasoned expert in cancer genomics and pathology. Simbionics, a digital health company he co-founded with Dr. Benjamin Rapoport was later acquired by Apple where he was instrumental in the early development of biosensors. He then spearheaded AI computer vision application to medical imaging data at Google Health. When I met with Dr. Mermel, I was inspired by the multidisciplinary nature of his career, making his impact in billion dollar companies of Apple and Google along the way and now in BCI at Precision Neuroscience. I would like to extend a warm welcome to Dr. Craig Mermel and I look forward to working collaboratively with him in the BCI and oncology spaces. - Neilank K. Jha, MD, FRCS(C), MSc, MBA, Conference Chair
