Belonging Begins in Schools
About us
Re-Imagining Migration transforms educators and the educational ecosystem by leveraging schools, museums, and other educational spaces to promote belonging, knowledge, understanding, and lifelong habits of mind among immigrant and non-immigrant youth so they can thrive in a world of migration and demographic change. These efforts strengthen our diverse communities, counter polarization, xenophobia, and hate, and transform migration from a crisis to an opportunity. We achieve this by re-imagining education as a vehicle for building belonging, which involves: - Developing and disseminating strength-based approaches to education for immigrant-origin youth that prioritizes teacher-student relationships and belonging. - Creating bridging opportunities for young people to learn with and from each other across their differences. - Providing professional learning opportunities and resources for educators to understand the role of migration in community development over time and across the world. 🌟 Celebrating Hispanic Heritage: Re-Imagining Migration 🌟 This month, we honor Latin Americans' civic power. One of our favorite, though lesser known, stories is the July 2017 Quinceañera Protest. This powerful event saw fifteen young Latina women protesting at the Texas State House wearing quinceañera dresses to celebrate their culture, including their identities as Texans, and advocate for their rights. The boldness of their young women's actions serves as a reminder of the strength and resilience of the Latin American community in the face of adversity. Sharing the stories in classrooms highlights how cultural traditions can empower youth to engage in civic activism and influence change in their communities. As we reflect on these inspiring stories, let’s amplify the voices of Latin Americans and support initiatives that foster community engagement and belonging. Together, we can reimagine migration and build a future where every voice matters! For more on this impactful protest and its significance, check out the full resource below. You'll have to set up a free account to access it. #HispanicHeritage #CivicEngagement #QuinceañeraProtest #Belonging #K12 #Civics https://lnkd.in/eJYuyEmE

Addressing stereotypes, even those voiced by politicians, is crucial to creating an inclusive and respectful classroom environment. When doing so, focus on the impact of discrimination on students and society, not the politics or politicians behind the statements. Acknowledging and addressing anti-immigrant rhetoric in real-time, like bullying, is essential. Ignoring it sends a signal that students' identities as immigrant-origin youth are not valued. It is crucial to understand that addressing these stereotypes is not political. Indeed, it is vital to address stereotypes while remaining non-partisan. Stereotypes are not simply another point of view. Unlike other viewpoints, stereotypes perpetuate false assumptions and biases. Educators must explore the roots of these stereotypes and their impact, focusing on empathy, understanding, and factual information to create a supportive and equitable learning environment where all students can thrive. See our tip sheet for addressing anti-immigrant prejudice. As always, we welcome your feedback and suggestions. Hate Hurts. You Can Help It's not funny when hateful lies about immigrants go viral. These recycled narratives about crime and bigoted and bizarre memes seep into our schools, breeding bullying and harassment. While some may feel insulated from this hate, the reality is that none of us are truly safe. Psychologist Beverly Daniel Tatum likens stereotypes to the smog that we all breathe in, making individuals and communities sick. At Re-Imagining Migration, we take this very seriously. Join us in our efforts to: -prevent anti-immigrant bullying, -build empathy and understanding across differences by educating about migration’s role as a throughline of the human experience, -promote belonging by supporting learning environments laser-focused to ensure that all students, particularly immigrant-origin youth, and the communities in which they settle, can thrive. With our partners, we have ambitious plans to ensure every young person feels nurtured and included. Our goals include: - Establishing a national standard for fostering belonging in schools - Customizing support for local communities - Developing digital learning modules for hundreds of thousands of teachers - Leveraging AI to enhance educational support - Driving impactful policy change In these divisive times, your support is crucial. Whether through connections, donations, or simply learning more, every effort counts. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eebGAMws #Inclusion #Belonging #Education #Immigration #Empathy

Important reporting from Jo Napolitano 🚨 Immigrant Advocates Urge Investigation into Enrollment Discrimination in Massachusetts 🚨 Advocates are calling on the Massachusetts Attorney General to investigate Saugus Public Schools for allegedly discriminatory enrollment practices against immigrant students. The district's requirement for families to complete a town census has raised concerns about violations of students' rights. Recent research from Oregon and Michigan reveals that English learners are often less likely to be enrolled in essential core classes compared to their peers, highlighting systemic barriers that persist in our education system. These exclusionary policies not only harm individual students but also deprive our school communities of the rich cultural contributions that diversity brings. 🤔 What do you think is lost when immigrant students are denied enrollment or tracked out of core classes? Let’s discuss the implications for our education system and society as a whole. #Education #Immigration #Equity #CivilRights https://lnkd.in/ebW6R4JD

#FirstDayFeels: The Power of Names in Building Belonging Remember the first time someone mispronounced your name? How did it make you feel? A name is more than just a label; it's a core part of our identity. Respecting and correctly pronouncing students' names is a fundamental step in building belonging. When we honor students' names, we show that we value their identity and background. Join us this month as we delve into the importance of building belonging in schools. Let's start by recognizing the profound impact of getting students' names right. One of our favorite first week of school activities is to allow students to "free write" about their names. It could be their first name or their last name. Invite students to pair and share their responses. Let us know if you try it. How do you show that you value your students' names and identities? #SchoolBelonging #RespectNames #Education

We are all in for #WelcomingWeek2024. Join us for this two-part webinar series. Migration and demographic change present an opportunity to reimagine school systems. By prioritizing students' identity development and community formation skills, we can create equitable environments where all students thrive. Schools are more than just places of education; they also serve as essential community support pillars, offering meals, child care, and health resources. Though schools often act as community hubs in practice, the theories behind how many schools operate often focus solely on academic outcomes. It is time to reimagine how schools might serve the broader population, how local organizations might facilitate education, and how we might activate community members as partners in life-long learning. In Part 1, we will present a new vision for education beyond K-12, where schools serve as community hubs welcoming families and providing essential support. In Part 2, we will offer practical resources, tools, and models to help bring this vision to life. We will also demonstrate the profound possibilities created when passionate people take action and highlight the powerful work of educators building belonging in their communities. There has been a lot of talk about #AI and #Education. Too little of it is focused on helping educators use AI to build belonging, support immigrant youth, and teach in ways that build empathy and understanding. In our latest blog for Share My Lesson we describe a new tool we built on Playlab AI to fill the gap. Thanks Yusuf Ahmad for creating the opportunity and Susan Goldstein Youssofi for allowing us to share the story. None of this work would be possible without Fernande Raine and our partners, The History Co:Lab and iThrive Games. https://lnkd.in/eFP4cQWE
