Today on FAO’s #WorldFoodDay we are highlighting the importance of smallholder and family farmers for our global food systems. Smallholder farmers produce around a third of the world’s food and are highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, but they are often excluded from decision-making processes around sustainable food systems. Regen10 and our partners are working to change this by supporting inclusive collaboration across the value chain, with farmers and landscape stewards at the center. This includes through our Outcomes-Based Framework, which has been developed in consultation with farmers and other food system actors, and our Transition Pathways series which highlights the need for long-term and sustained financial support to help farmers achieve a regenerative transition. Regen10
Non-profit Organizations
A global endeavor exploring potential to scale productive and regenerative food systems for people, nature, and climate.
About us
Regen10 aims to build a shared understanding of how regenerative approaches can deliver positive outcomes for people, nature and climate. We serve existing leaders and practitioners in regenerative food systems and bring others on the journey through an approach that is based on evidence, knowledge and the lived experiences of farmers and other food system actors. There are many examples of regenerative and agroecological initiatives operating in different regions and at varying scales. We seek to draw on the learnings from these initiatives, build alignment on desired outcomes across stakeholders, and focus efforts on addressing existing gaps. Drawing on our discussions with food system actors, we have identified five key actions that we will focus on to achieve our goals: building an evidence-base and a shared understanding of what it will take to scale regenerative food systems, developing a holistic Outcomes Framework, connecting a growing network of regenerative practitioners across the globe, helping create an enabling policy and finance environment, and fostering global momentum towards regenerative food systems transformation. Our partners include The Food and Land Use Coalition, Global Alliance for the Future of Food, IUCN, Leaders’ Quest, Meridian Institute, Sustainable Food Trust, Systemiq, 1000 Landscapes, WBCSD, and World Farmers’ Organisation. Recently at #ClimateWeekNYC, The Rockefeller Foundation’s Sara Farley highlighted Regen10's work during a Food Tank panel discussion on healthy soils. During the discussion, Sara underscored the importance of creating “a harmonized definition of regenerative that brings together all the brilliance around these [regenerative food system] approaches with farmers, Indigenous communities, businesses, and science.” Creating and supporting multi-stakeholder alignment is a critical part of the food systems transition. Regen10’s Outcomes-Based Framework aims to do this by providing all food system actors with a shared understanding of what it will take to advance regenerative approaches for people and planet. This week's High-Level Advisory Group retreat marked a key moment for Regen10, coming at a time when regenerative agriculture has seen significant progress since our launch. As we take stock of what we've achieved in a short space of time – gathering a diverse set of partners, identifying our shared direction, co-creating knowledge, and gaining insights from the wider agroecological and regenerative space – our retreat was an opportunity for our high-level advisors to reflect on the initiative's successes and learning. It also allowed us to ideate on how we can continue to contribute inclusively and meaningfully to a rapidly evolving regenerative agriculture ecosystem. It was a valuable moment to reconnect, explore new insights, and ensure that Regen10 remains focused on deep collaboration for regenerative food systems, with farmers always central to our efforts. Regen10’s #FrameworkTrials series highlights different farming techniques in key food producing landscapes, which will help inform the development of our Outcomes-Based Framework. In the Australian farms we visited, crop and livestock farming is integrated to form a mixed system. The farming methods used enabled the livestock to be better protected during drought season. Livestock were also being used to restore soil fertility through rotational grazing. Tara Shyam, Regen10 Director, joined an International Rice Research Institute consultation workshop on access to finance in the low emission rice value chain in Vietnam to discuss how Regen10 approaches the specific challenges of transforming rice production systems through regenerative practices. Tara highlighted how it is essential that food system stakeholders recognise that to build a regenerative food system, it is not one size fits all. Rather, Regen10’s Outcomes-Based Framework seeks to holistically focus on outcomes, rather than specific practices. Our recent Transition Pathways case study in Punjab, India, was also spotlighted as it shows both the challenges that exist for rice farmers and also what a transition can help farmers achieve within their landscape context, including crop diversification and the adoption of low-emissions practices. “Have farmers central to the conversation – that’s what we believe at Regen10.” Regen10 Director, Tara Shyam, led a fireside chat during “Growing Tomorrow: Collective Leadership in Regenerative Landscapes” at Regen House this #ClimateWeekNYC. At the event, co-hosted by OP2B, WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Regen House, 2030 Breakthrough, Regen10, COP28 UAE, and Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Tara was joined by the World Farmers' Organisation (WFO) Secretary General, Andrea Porro, and Laura Thomas, MS (she/her/hers) of GC Resolve. The discussion aimed to cultivate a shared understanding of regenerative food systems and agriculture, which go beyond specific practices and embody a shift in mindsets towards resilient and equitable food systems. Tara highlighted Regen10’s Outcomes-Based Framework and the role all food system stakeholders must play in enabling a transition to regenerative agriculture. It was brilliant to hear the perspectives of WFO, longstanding partner of Regen10, about how a farmer-centric outcomes-based framework is needed to support farmers worldwide in the transition, while Laura outlined GC Resolve’s work and how regenerative practices are being used by farmers on-the-ground in Nebraska to support sustainability and resilience. Thank you to all those who attended and to our speakers for their valuable insight. Without farmers being at the centre of the conversation, we cannot work toward inclusive, regenerative, and equitable food systems. “Each farmer that we met described an intrinsic motivation for change – whether that be to look after the land so that in return it looks after them, or to hand down a resilient, thriving farm to the next generation.” Sustainable Food Trust’s Olivia Boothman has written about her recent trip to Nebraska, USA, on behalf of Regen10. Alongside Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU), the visit was an opportunity to test our Outcomes-Based Framework with farmers. This critical process, which we have been highlighting in our #FrameworkTrials series, is helping us to refine our framework based on farmers’ experiences and feedback. Read more below and for the full article, head to the comments section ⬇️
I shared my musings on my trip to Nebraska for our (Global Farm Metric's) work with Regen10 in this month's Sustainable Food Trust newsletter. The crux of it is this: "for long-term, sustainable change, regenerative agriculture must, in my view, become a social movement, driven by coordinated grassroots action and facilitated by supportive policy and financing." A huge thank you to Graham Christensen for hosting us and introducing us to the brilliant farmers who inspired this article. https://lnkd.in/eTtY7TTD
