Yesterday, news broke that another major corporation was revisiting its remote work policy. 3M is the latest company to announce a return to office, sharing that, starting next month, senior leaders will be required to be in the office three days a week. Other employees are being encouraged to join them for what are being coined "collaboration days." Setting aside any opinions you may have about the pros and cons of such a move, I’d offer that being face-to-face with your teammates offers immeasurable benefits. I'd also say that it's essential to recognize that in-person interactions alone aren't a cure-all for collaboration challenges. As companies contemplate office returns, recognizing that collaboration stems from skills, not just proximity, is crucial. These skills, whether we like it or not, have either grown rust from being left unused in the field of Zoom calls or were never developed in the first place due to the COVID hangover. Coupling a return to the office decision with a deliberate plan to foster these skills is critical for any organization that wants to capture the full value of bringing people back to "HQ." To truly reap the benefits of a return to office, companies need a deliberate plan to foster collaboration skills. That's where Second City Works comes in. For more than 30 years we've helped businesses around the globe apply the core tenets of improvisation – agility, communication, active listening, and teamwork – to solve real business problems.
