At SEGD, we believe in the transformative power of art and design to heal, inspire, and change lives. Every stroke of the brush, every choice of color, and every thoughtfully crafted design element holds the potential to lift spirits and reshape the human experience. From redesigning an old department store into a vibrant wonderland where young minds can flourish to reimagining hospital corridors brought to life with soothing watercolors that comfort patients and energize caregivers, to collaborating with young adults in a correctional facility to replace stark white walls with murals of hope—designers are rewriting what it means to create spaces that heal and inspire. Every day, we witness how intentional design turns spaces into catalysts for healing, growth, and connection. A child’s first steps into learning become an adventure, a patient’s journey feels lighter, and rehabilitation is transformed into a hopeful path forward—all through the profound impact of art and design. 💡 Read more in our latest article: https://lnkd.in/eUkgfSzN _____ Featured images from some of our favorite SEGD Global Design Award-winning projects: 1-2: Allina Health Surgery Centers; Designed and Photographed by Heather Novak-Peterson 3-4: North Kansas City Early Education Center; DLR Group, Photographed by Michael Robinson Photography 5-6: MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility, East Campus Housing; Mayer/Reed, Inc., Photographed by Sally Painter, Blaine Fontana, Mayer/Reed, DLR Group #HealingThroughDesign #ExperientialDesign #ArtThatInspires #SEGD

This is such a thoughtful reflection from David Schwarz about yesterday's article on the power of restraint in designing for reflection. Putting out to the community—what's your take? Anything you'd add to this?

How do we create spaces that don’t just inform but transform? Spaces where silence speaks louder than words, and simplicity invites profound reflection? In our latest article, we explore award-winning projects that embody the power of restraint in design. From the National Memorial for Peace and Justice to Society’s Cage, these spaces confront painful pasts with care and intention—transforming them into platforms for dialogue, healing, and envisioning more just futures. These projects remind us that design is not only about what we create but also about the space we leave for people to feel, reflect, and connect. Can design spark change? Can it provoke action? Society’s Cage boldly answers these questions by transforming data about systemic racism into a visceral, public experience. Created in response to the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, this grassroots installation debuted on the National Mall—an iconic site of historic protests like Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech—challenging us to see design as a powerful tool for reckoning with racial injustice. This 2022 SEGD Global Design Award-winning project uses nearly 500 weathered steel rods to tell stories of systemic oppression: lynching, police brutality, mass incarceration, and capital punishment. The haunting detail that only 25% of the rods touch the ground symbolizes the devastating reality that 1 in 4 Black Americans will face incarceration in their lifetime. As one juror noted, “This project created a new public space: a place for performance, commemoration, protest, and discourse around social justice. Simple yet incredibly powerful.” Society’s Cage demonstrates that great design can provoke reflection, inspire action, and demand change. Thanks to the project team Dayton Schroeter AIA, Julian Arrington, Monteil Crawley, AIA,LEED AP, and Ivan O'Garro for showing us what’s possible when design meets activism. Numbers are more than symbols: they’re stories, guides, and—when designed with imagination—evoke moments of delight. Whether they dance across walls or stand boldly in a crowd, their simplicity speaks volumes, balancing form and function. In our latest article, 'Numbers in Space: From Symbols to Stories,' we examine how designers are using numbers to create artful expressions of space and purpose.
