Can design spark change? Can it provoke action? Society’s Cage boldly answers these questions by transforming data about systemic racism into a visceral, public experience. Created in response to the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, this grassroots installation debuted on the National Mall—an iconic site of historic protests like Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech—challenging us to see design as a powerful tool for reckoning with racial injustice. This 2022 SEGD Global Design Award-winning project uses nearly 500 weathered steel rods to tell stories of systemic oppression: lynching, police brutality, mass incarceration, and capital punishment. The haunting detail that only 25% of the rods touch the ground symbolizes the devastating reality that 1 in 4 Black Americans will face incarceration in their lifetime. As one juror noted, “This project created a new public space: a place for performance, commemoration, protest, and discourse around social justice. Simple yet incredibly powerful.” Society’s Cage demonstrates that great design can provoke reflection, inspire action, and demand change.
