SERC Reliability Corporation’s Manager of Analytics & Data Management Maggie Peacock recently presented at The Council of State Governments – South Chapter’s Policy Masterclass on AI, sharing her perspectives on the impact of AI on electric reliability, public policy, and risk mitigation. She emphasized that AI holds great potential in enhancing the grid’s stability and security, particularly in areas such as dynamic line ratings, vegetation management, and enabling microgrids. However, she stressed the importance of understanding the associated risks and prioritizing mitigation strategies. This was an important conversation about the evolving role of AI in shaping the future of electric reliability and the bulk power system. Many thanks to everyone involved in this valuable event! Looking forward to continuing the dialogue around AI and reliability. CSG South #AI #ElectricReliabilty #PolicyMasterclass #LeadWithPurpose

SERC’s mission is to reduce risks to the reliability and security of the grid, not only for today but for the future.
About us
The electric grid is vital to our everyday lives. It is fundamental for the health, safety, and well-being of our communities, and provides the platform for our economy and our societal and technological advancements. SERC’s mission is to reduce risks to the reliability and security of the electric grid (also known as the bulk power system) for today and the future. To achieve this mission, we maintain a diverse team of experts across numerous disciplines in order to address the complex, evolving, and dynamic challenges facing the grid. Our team also partners with the best and brightest individuals from both the power industry and the federal government to understand and address the challenges facing the grid. These key partnerships make our work more informed, pragmatic, responsive, and impactful. We are one of only six companies across North America that is responsible for this important work under Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approved delegation agreements with the North American Electric Reliability Corporation. Our company is specifically responsible for the reliability and security of the electric grid across the southeastern and central regions of the United States. This area covers approximately 630,000 square miles and serves a population of more than 91 million. It includes all or portions of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

Jason Blake, SERC President & CEO, and Brian Thumm, SERC Vice President, Performance Improvement & Risk Management, welcomed Scott Hunnewell, Vice President of the New Nuclear Program at Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), during his presentation at SERC Reliability Corporation’s Risk Committee meeting. Scott shared insights on the future of Small Modular Nuclear Reactors (SMRs) and how they can increase electric generation across TVA’s seven-state footprint. His perspectives on the benefits and challenges of nuclear energy were invaluable. We appreciate his time and expertise! #EnergyInnovation #LeadWithPurpose #SMRs

During SERC Reliability Corporation’s Risk Committee meeting, Maria Haney, MBA, PE, PMP, CRMP, Manager of Situation Awareness & Events Analysis, discussed one of the biggest challenges to grid reliability – extreme weather. Hurricanes like Beryl and Debby, an increase in the pattern of heat domes, extended heat waves, and lightning activity are putting significant strain on the bulk power system. We are learning from past events, such as the recent islanding in Texas, to fortify our response in the future. The good news is we’ve had a better year this year when it comes to extreme weather. Join us in our commitment to safeguard the grid through advanced risk mitigation and operator preparedness. #GridReliability #ExtremeWeather #BoardMeetings #LeadWithPurpose

With the potential for extreme cold weather this winter, SERC Reliability Corporation emphasizes the importance of ensuring adequate natural gas supply for electric system reliability. Preparing critical infrastructure is vital to meeting the demands of severe weather conditions. SERC is particularly attentive to potential reductions in gas supply along the Transco pipeline. We encourage all stakeholders to prioritize winter preparedness and ensure that all systems are in place to maintain grid reliability.

The bulk electric system remained stable as Hurricane Francine made landfall as a Category 2 storm near Terrebonne Parish, LA, on September 11. Now a depression near Jackson, MS, Francine is expected to dissipate tomorrow evening. Impacted entities in the SERC Reliability Corporation footprint are working to restore power to affected customers. #Francine

This week ERO Enterprise staff participated in physical security training hosted at the RF offices here in Cleveland. They also had the opportunity to apply their knowledge outside the classroom with a field trip to view the security perimeter at a nearby substation. Thank you to SERC Reliability Corporation’s Travis Moran and Patrick Stier, CISM, CPP, PSP, PCI, CTI for leading this informative training to help staff from North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), ReliabilityFirst Corporation, Midwest Reliability Organization, Northeast Power Coordinating Council, Inc. (NPCC), Texas Reliability Entity, Inc. and WECC protect the electric grid from our adversaries. #forwardtogether #security #electricgrid
