Climate Week NYC is right around the corner! AWC and WoodWorks are hosting our inaugural event to discuss how wood is the right-now solution to reduce emissions in the built environment. https://lnkd.in/e6P9YHP9
The Softwood Lumber Board (SLB) is an industry funded initiative established to promote the benefits and uses of softwood lumber products in outdoor, residential and non-residential construction. Programs and initiatives supported by the SLB will focus on increasing the demand for appearance and softwood lumber products.

Inspiring future business leaders: a case study in sustainability Founders Hall, Foster School of Business, University of Washington, became the first project in the world to sell #carbon offsets realized through sequestered carbon in the #masstimber, a move which helped pay for the construction itself. By using mass timber the Founders Hall design team, led by LMN Architects, reduced the building’s embodied carbon by 58 percent. Now considered the greenest building on campus, the LEED Gold project sets an example of how to use wood to provide measurable benefits for future University of Washington campus buildings. The AWC is continuing its efforts to strengthen the wood product industry’s sustainability data collection efforts through the launch of its yearly Life Cycle Survey and a recent $6M grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). With a focus on reducing embodied carbon in the built environment, the grant will fund a variety of projects over a five-year period, including developing an Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) generator, a funding mechanism to support mills as they develop their own EPDs, and programs to help educate AEC firms on whole building life cycle assessments. This year’s Life Cycle Survey, which launched on August 1 and is open to all U.S. mills, will further strengthen the survey’s data and subsequent LCAs and EPDs produced. If you’d like to participate, contact Anna Ostrander at aostrander@awc.org.
Described by one attendee as “taking a master-level class in mass timber,” WoodWorks project tours are often a tipping point that encourages developers and architecture, engineering, and construction professionals to pursue their own wood-based projects. If you’re interested in touring innovative structures built with wood, such as multifamily projects, commercial buildings, and schools, browse WoodWorks’ upcoming events. https://hubs.ly/Q02MKXk60

Is Tall Mass Timber the Optimal Solution for Multi-Family High-Rise Construction? As urbanization and rising land costs drive greater densification, the need for efficient and sustainable construction methods become increasingly crucial. Read our 4-page brief featuring commentary from developers of U.S. tall mass timber projects, who collectively answer — “Why mass timber? Why now?” https://lnkd.in/dZTC3wP4 Pictured: Heartwood – Seattle, WA / Skipstone Development, atelierjones LLC / Eight stories of mass timber #tallwood #tallmasstimber #masstimberconstruction #realestatedevelopment #sustainablebuildings #multifamily #housing #highrise
Lumber demand from single-family home construction and remodeling is volatile—the last few years alone have seen major swings from the COVID pandemic in 2020 to high interest rates last year. This is why a diversified demand base is key to minimizing the impact of that volatility on the wood products industry. Find out how the SLB continues to defend market share in single-family and outdoor applications while pursuing new market opportunities in non-residential and multifamily construction. https://hubs.ly/Q02Kq2cS0
The SLB’s August newsletter highlights a $6M EPA grant that will support the AWC’s work to strengthen the industry’s sustainability data collection. It also covers new wood education courses, building tours for architects and developers, and more. Read the full newsletter here: https://lnkd.in/dX7h8M3D

Hybrid Design Expert Tip: Mass Timber Floor and Roof Panels Over Light-Frame Wood Walls One of the more recent developments in mid-rise multi-family design is the merger of mass timber and light-frame wood construction—typically light-frame bearing walls supporting mass timber floor and roof panels. Learn about how this hybrid approach utilizes the strengths of both systems: https://lnkd.in/eft7uM9u Pictured: Four stories of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and light-frame wood over a two-story concrete podium on the Canyons project in Portland, OR. Exciting news: the American Wood Council launched a new construction fire safety app! Developed in collaboration with the Construction Fire Safety Coalition (CFSC), the app provides a Construction Fire Safety Checklist and is designed to support builders and inspectors, promote safe construction practices, and help meet construction site code requirements. The app is available for both Apple and Android users and can be downloaded on phones or tablets.
