About us
Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools® (UCS) is a strategy for schools Pre-K through university that intentionally promotes meaningful social inclusion by bringing together students with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities to create accepting school environments. With sports as the foundation, UCS utilizes three interconnected components: Special Olympics Unified Sports®, Inclusive Youth Leadership, and Whole School Engagement. UCS programming supports students, athletes, teachers, school administrators, district officials, coaches, parents, and educators across grade-levels with resources that improve outcomes for students of all abilities. Since 2008, UCS has operated in the Special Olympics North America region of Special Olympics International. Our work has been generously supported by the Office of Special Education Programs at the U.S. Department of Education. Globally, UCS engages over 1 million students in 30,000 schools across 148 countries with plans to reach over 2 million students in 150,000 schools in the next three years.

The partnership between Special Olympics and the NAIA continues to make an impact; just ask Carroll College and Special Olympics Montana! Through this collaboration, NAIA schools work directly with Special Olympics athletes, promoting inclusion and building bridges within the community in Helena, MT through sports. Recently, Carroll College was named the 1st NAIA School of Character Award winner 🎉, in part due to the continued efforts to integrate Special Olympics athletes and programming into the campus experience. Congratulations to Carroll College, the school's Unified club (pictured here!) and Special Olympics Montana for supporting this important collaboration. Here's to many more years as a school with distinguished character, Carroll College!

This past weekend, we had the honor of hosting the 2024 U.S. Youth Ambassador Onboarding training at the Special Olympics Headquarters office in Washington, D.C. 🙌 Over 2 amazing days, we welcomed the new class of Youth Ambassadors (2024-2026) and reunited with the class of 2025 for a refresher training. These dynamic youth leaders, both with and without intellectual disabilities, are committed to representing the #UnifiedGeneration and advancing the cause of inclusion in schools across the country. 🌟 During the training, the Youth Ambassadors learned about their new roles, planned for upcoming activations, and even had time to explore the sights of D.C. 🏛️ They also participated in content filming with our production partners at CLICKON, so keep an eye out for that in the coming months! 🎥 Join us in thanking these incredible young leaders, as well as their mentors, state Programs, and the amazing Inclusive Youth Leadership team for their dedication to the #InclusionRevolution! 🙌 Special Olympics Hawaii Special Olympics Massachusetts Special Olympics North Carolina Special Olympics Florida Special Olympics Michigan Special Olympics Washington Special Olympics New York Special Olympics Minnesota Special Olympics Colorado Special Olympics Connecticut Special Olympics Pennsylvania Special Olympics Ohio Special Olympics Utah Natalie Campbell Newell Emily Canizalez Jason Rogers Melanie Dammel Eliana Neuwirth

An insightful read to start off the last full week of #BullyingPreventionMonth! #UnifiedGeneration #ChooseToInclude #InclusionRevolution
Despite years of progress, the harmful use of the R-word is resurfacing in popular culture and politics, reminding us that language can deeply impact people with intellectual disabilities. At Special Olympics, we remain dedicated to fostering respect and inclusion for all. Had an incredible weekend in D.C. at the Special Olympics U.S. Youth Ambassador onboarding event! It was amazing to reconnect with my fellow ambassadors, meet the new class of ambassadors, share our passion for inclusion, and strengthen our bond as we prepare to drive change. We spent time learning about activation strategies, practicing public speaking, and sharpening our self-advocacy skills to help us better represent the Unified Generation. So excited to put all of this into action and continue building a world that celebrates everyone! I'm forever proud to be a member of the #UnifiedGeneration, and I am honored to be an agent of change for the #InclusionRevolution

Thank you to Nisqually Indian Tribe and the Native people who have shared their gifts with Special Olympics to create a more culturally responsive #YoungAthletes program. I cannot wait to see it flourish under your direction.
🎥 This #IndigenousPeoplesDay, discover the power of culturally inclusive Special Olympics Young Athletes programming! The Nisqually Indian Tribe, with the help of Special Olympics Washington, has seamlessly integrated indigenized Young Athletes into their Head Start program on the reservation. 🌍 The joy, growth, and connection that Young Athletes provides young ages 2-7 is even greater when it helps preserve the foods, language, and games of native communities. See how play and early childhood development come to life in a way that honors traditions while empowering every child. 💪🏽 Watch the full video and learn more: https://loom.ly/dJ1Ln4Q #UnifiedGeneration #IndigenousPeoplesDay #InclusionRevolution

Thank you to The Minnesota Star Tribune & Jim Paulsen for writing this beautiful story about Minneapolis Public Schools teacher/coach Rodney Lossow. He's a phenomenal Adapted PE teacher at Roosevelt and South, and currently a tremendous football coach at Roosevelt. 👏🎉🏈 He also started and led Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools® via Special Olympics Minnesota at South High School a few years ago. Now he's been able to pass along this incredible leadership role in Unified to his colleagues and students, since he's pretty busy right now....understatement of the year. I'm honored and humbled to serve alongside Rodney Lossow in Minneapolis. He is an incredible individual who is living a phenomenal life. We are so lucky to have him giving so much to our community. #MPSproud #TheMinnesotaStarTribune #GenerationUnified #InclusionRevolution #SOMN
