🙏
This was almost the last picture I ever took as a living being here on earth yesterday. I remember being so excited seeing these beautiful Fall colors, on the second day of my birthday month, decidedly - and likely very biasedly - my favorite month of the year. But about 2-3 minutes later, I was walking along the same sidewalk when a driver of a very large truck speedily backed out of their driveway without paying attention while I was squarely behind their vehicle. I was listening to a podcast so I’m not quite sure how I heard the car but at the very last second, I saw it barreling towards me and I quickly ran ahead and thankfully narrowly averted it hitting me. In my stereotypical loud Latina way, I screamed at the driver at the top of my lungs all sorts of bloody murder, all the while being incredibly shaken up. It didn’t fully hit me what had happened till a little bit after when I had a total nervous breakdown - it had already been a bad day. To be honest, I’m still reeling - imagine someone who has devoted her entire career - and life really - to advocating for better urban design (in part because she lost a friend to a ped/vehicle collision 30 years ago) losing her life because of a reckless, senseless driver. It didn’t help that this truck was at least a foot taller than me. I’m still not quite ok, but thankful I’m here to tell this story. Please, people - drivers - I urge you - understand you are operating a potentially lethal weapon. Operate it with care. Pretend the lives of your loved ones are at stake when you’re driving - indeed they sometimes are! I guess right now I’m mostly just grateful to still be here but still processing so many emotions. I'm also even more grateful and honored that State of Place was awarded an SBIR from USDOT to apply AI to creating Complete Streets - or safer, more convenient streets for all! I didn't think I could be more motivated to crush this grant...and yet! More info on the grant in the comments. In the meantime, please be safe.
