In August 2023, Stillwater Cancer Center treated its first patient with groundbreaking technology designed for precision radiation therapy. Michael Chacko, medical physicist, was a part of the dynamic, cross-functional team who coordinated efforts to deliver that first treatment. “I came here because of the MR-Linac,” Chacko said. “I had been working at the Oklahoma Proton Center for nine years. It was a great place, and a short commute from my home, but I wanted to treat patients with the best tools available. This machine is the future of cancer treatment. I couldn’t miss an opportunity to be a part of that,” Chacko said. The Elekta Unity is an MR-Linac with the ability to provide continuous, anatomy specific MR imaging and comprehensive motion management for precision radiation therapy. With clear images, the care team can target treatment and spare healthy tissue. The enhanced detail allows them to deliver more powerful doses of radiation, cutting treatment time in half. Stillwater Medical Center’s recent expansion projects gain recognition from the Associated General Contractors of Oklahoma (AGCOK). Manhattan Construction Co. received the “Best of the Best Award” for the Stillwater Cancer Center Phase 1 expansion and Lambert Construction received the “Build Oklahoma Award” for the Stillwater Surgery Center expansion. Stillwater Medical is committed to providing quality and compassionate healthcare to North Central Oklahoma. This leads the healthcare system to invest in facility improvements and expansion projects that ensure providers and patients have access to excellent care. “There’s been years of cooperation with engineers, physicists, construction management folks, I could go on and on.” Hatfield said. “From the day the concrete was poured, it’s been all about the patient. Ciera Whitmore is a wife and mother of two. She balances her career as an occupational therapist (OT) with helping on the family farm and running their local store, Whitmore Farms Market in Coyle, OK. These roles take up most of her time and are incredibly fulfilling. Yet, passion has propelled her to add advocate, fundraiser, and national speaker to the list as she fights for the vocation she loves. Whitmore knew she wanted to be a therapist from a young age when her sister, Karli, suffered an accident and spent two weeks on life support in the critical care unit. It was during this time that her eyes were opened to the caregivers surrounding patients in their journey back to health. Karli passed away, but the impact she made on Whitmore’s life remains.
