What is #COP16 and what are Sustainable Ocean Alliance young leaders up to on the ground? 🌎 Right now in Cali, Colombia, thousands of international delegates are gathered to discuss and negotiate global efforts to protect biodiversity under the UN Convention on Biodiversity (CBD). 🌿 Despite separate mandates, CBD and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (aka UNFCCC, which will convene next month for #COP29 in Azerbaijan) are highly complementary and can effectively collaborate. 🤝 🌊 Ocean-based solutions can support these synergies, weaving a ‘blue thread’ across national biodiversity and climate strategies. As an accredited organization, SOA is proud to support a delegation of 16 young ocean professionals to partake in these important discussions and decision-making processes. We know more than anything, young people are leading the urgency & equitable/just perspectives that are needed to address our polycrisis. Stay tuned for more updates to come from our on the ground delegation! 🎥 video created by SOA x ECOP Canada Hub Leader Laura Hernandez Merlano, featuring Sustainable Ocean Alliance Perú (SOA Perú) Hub President Stefanie Torres and SOA COSTA RICA Co-President and COP16 Delegation Lead Francisco Lara-Fletes.

New newsletter name, same great ocean content 🌊 Today, Sustainable Ocean Alliance is thrilled to share an evolution of our LinkedIn-exclusive newsletter under the name Rising Tides. Why 'rising tides'? In the ocean-climate sector, we are often guided and motivated by the famous adage, "A rising tide lifts all boats." For us at Sustainable Ocean Alliance, we live and breathe this every single day as we work to elevate one another in our sector and beyond—to work intersectionally, intergenerationally, and intentionally. What can you expect to get out of our newsletter? Every month, we will deliver top insights into the exciting progress and milestones from SOA’s portfolio of solutions, new opportunities to get involved in, and upcoming events and networking engagements within our diverse Network. It's been a minute, so we have a LOT to catch up on. In today’s edition, we learn about what ocean-positive leather alternative hit the runway at this year's Paris Fashion Week, how to support advancements in underwater reef research stations, a Northern California city implementing a city-wide reusable cup program, and more. This juvenile humpback whale is one of the rarest on Planet Earth. 🌎🐋 Born near the islands of Vava’u in the South Pacific, Mãhina (meaning ‘moon’ in Tongan) is an all-white humpback whale. Of the estimated 150,000 remaining humpbacks, she is among only 3-4 other known individuals to share this captivating and rare genetic mutation. However, her case is unique in that she does not have red eyes often seen in albino species—making it to be determined by scientists if she is albino, leucistic, or otherwise. It is one-of-a-kind creatures like Mahiña that continue to grow our love for our big, beautiful, and ever-evolving blue planet. 🎥 captured by Jono Allen

Itʻs time to #DefendTheDeep... The deep sea is our planet's largest carbon sink, the ancestor of Indigenous Pacific peoples, and is at risk of being destroyed by #DeepSeaMining. 30+ countries have said NO to deep-sea mining and several U.S. states and territories have joined together to ban this harmful practice in their state's waters, most recently Hawai'i. Sustainable Ocean Alliance needs your help as we work to create deep sea defenders in Washington D.C. with our friends from chilli app. Send an email letter in one click to demand U.S. representatives #StopDeepSeaMining → https://bit.ly/40bImiG We are taking a stand. On #IndigenousPeoplesDay, we are celebrating one of the longest anticipated ocean conservation wins in the US: the official designation of the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary! 🎉 Following more than a decade of action and advocacy from the Northern Chumash Tribal Council and its allies, this 4,543 square-mile sanctuary off the coast of Central California is officially designated as PROTECTED. ✊ What makes this sanctuary unique? 🌎 It is now the third largest marine protected area in the U.S. 🙌 It is the FIRST MPA to be Tribal nominated AND approved 🐋 in addition to protecting marine life and ecosystems, it also protects sacred sites, ancient villages, and thousands of years of Chumash cultural heritage. Join us in celebrating this with for ocean conservation, Indigenous climate justice, and beyond 🫶 Video by: Northern Chumash Tribal Council’s Mia Lopez sings the Chumash’s Wave Song, “the waves come in, the waves go out” 🌊
