Did you know that 85% of carbon dioxide emissions from *all* publicly traded companies comes from just 20% of the market? Our banking and investment choices — both as individuals and as companies — can do much better for our planet. Sway is proud to share that our employee 401(k)s are climate-aligned, made possible through our partner Carbon Collective. By directing our dollars into diversified, mission-driven portfolios that enable clean electricity, energy efficient buildings, sustainable food, and more, we're helping to build a future we actually want to retire into. We encourage all companies out there to learn more about what sustainable investment can look like, and the benefits we stand to gain from it. About us
Sway is a cleantech startup scaling seaweed-based, rapidly compostable replacements for plastic, beginning with flexible packaging. Our patented products match the vital performance attributes of conventional plastics and are designed to plug into existing infrastructure, enabling scale and competitive pricing. Unlike plastic, however, our materials are made from an abundant, regenerative resource and decompose into healthy soil after use. In 2023, Sway won first place in the TOM FORD Plastic Innovation Prize. In 2021, Sway also won the Beyond the Bag Challenge sponsored by Closed Loop Partners and a consortium of major retailers. Sway’s solutions have garnered recognition from Vogue, Condé Nast, Forbes, Business Insider, and Fast Company. As a member of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, the Sustainable Ocean Alliance, and 1% for the Planet, Sway is working holistically to scale their product for a thriving, equitable future. Sway is headquartered in the California Bay Area. To learn more, visit swaythefuture.com.

These pellets are made from a special ingredient that could help end plastic packaging! Sway have found a solution to replacing the plastic pellet ‘nurdles’ that are melted down and used in the creation of plastic products. And the best thing about it is, it fits into existing industry infrastructure!

Microplastics, or tiny particles shed from synthetic textiles and products, are a growing concern in the fashion industry. Clothing microfibers significantly contribute to marine pollution. And research shows that plastic #microfibers and #nanofibers comprise up to 35% of #microplastics in marine environments. Increasingly, brands are leveraging alternatives — like Sway packaging materials made from seaweed! — which can replicate the look, durability and feel of plastic. This Glossy article by Zofia Zwieglinska shares how fashion brands, including our friends Burton Snowboards and Florence Marine X, are pioneering efforts to uplift regenerative alternatives to plastic and set new standards for the industry. Thank you Lonely Whale for connecting Sway to these incredible innovation brands through the TOM FORD Plastic Innovation Prize! #UnwrapTheFuture 🌊 Read now → https://lnkd.in/gFCKAz9K

Last week, Sway was invited to share our seaweed packaging solutions at the World Surf League #USOpenOfSurfing, one of the largest global surf competitions! As we know from our collaboration with Florence Marine X, the brand of Surf Olympian John John Florence, ocean health and the issue of plastic pollution are near and dear to the surfing community, who witness both firsthand. Together with Sustainable Ocean Alliance and rePurpose Global, Sway picked up pounds of plastic big and small from the coastline with The Surfrider Foundation, created oyster habitat from discarded restaurant shells with Orange County Coastkeeper, and learned about sea creatures with marine biologists. We even got to hang with the Florence brand, sharing our seaweed packaging collaboration together. It was incredibly special to witness people of all ages, from all around the world, coming together for this special event and taking action for cleaner seas. Huge thanks to World Surf League and #OneOcean for using their platform to uplift the people, products, and practices creating a thriving future for our oceans!

Regenerative feedstocks present viable pathways to a cleaner, biologically circular future by actively nurturing ecosystems. The great thing is? The technologies are already here. We just have to scale 'em. At Circularity 24, Sway co-founder & CEO Julia Marsh shares the landscape of biomaterials that make us ask, "What if?" — and paints a picture for how we can responsibly scale them. Featured in this video: 🦐 Cruz Foam ☕ Kaffeeform 🥥 CocoPallet International B.V. 🌞 Shellworks 🫛 Xampla 🌊 And of course, Sway! Coverage about the state of plastics often feels bleak, but not here. WIRED's assessment of solutions is vibrant, entertaining, and filled with hope. Innovative methods for avoiding plastic waste are already in the market, and this article generously showcases them with a delightful segment centered around Sway's seaweed-based packaging! Some favorite quotes include: 🐺 "The environmental problem of 'single-use plastics' haunts the public imagination like a spectral wolf." 💫 "The members of Marsh’s lab group were like a team from the Marvel Universe." 🌊 "My teenage son was impressed. Before I could say I don’t think you’re supposed to do that, he ripped off a small chunk and chewed on it. “It tastes like seaweed,” he said." 🌞 "If you add up all these unplastic developments, you’ll find grounds for cautious optimism: We’ve got a path to a world less littered with deathless plastic waste." Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ggEZCtXq 🌊 Thank you to Clive Thompson and the whole WIRED team. We look forward to seeing this in print very soon! ft. "The members of Julia Marsh's lab group were like a team from the Marvel Universe: There was Amanda Guan, who’d recently gotten her master’s degree, in a white lab coat, gray turtleneck, and plastic safety goggles that somehow managed to look hip; Joakim Engström, a boisterous Swedish polymer scientist with a bushy mustache and a wool hat; and Matthew Catarino, the Big Plastics escapee, reserved beneath his baseball cap." This one's a special feature for us. The WIRED team has seen Sway through the development of our technology portfolio, from Firstwave™ to TPSea™ to TPSea Flex™. It's been a true delight having Clive Thompson as an interviewer-turned-friend through calls, lab visits, and many emails over the last couple years — thank you for bringing our seaweed solutions to the surface through WIRED's lens.
