Swiss Leading House Africa

Thank you to the University of Johannesburg visitors Dr Ndivhuwo Luruli Nemakhavhani Daphney and Ntombise Mangqase who joined us yesterday in Basel. There was a fantastic exchange with the University of Basel Grants and Fundraising and International Office University of Basel on topics of funding, alumni, collaboration and more. Dr. Tanja Popović Caroline Mattingley-Scott Luca Wacker After a brief stop at the Basel Autumn Fair Douglas Haggstrom accompanied the group to Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute for a great discussion with Jürg Utzinger Kobina Assan Ampah on mutual learning on collaborations, grants and innovation and entrepreneurship. We hope to see UJ higher up on the ranking of collaborations in Research and Innovation in the next round of the Swiss Leading House in 2025-28. Direct contacts and networks are the key to bilateral collaboration and to ensure that instruments are designed for mutual benefit and maximum impact. We are looking forward to more exchange and a great program in 2025-28 with the Swiss Leading House Africa.

🌍 Calling Drug Development talents in Africa 🤝   Drug Development used to be the domain of big Pharma and then across time the role of academic innovation has grown. In the last 20 years Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative - DNDi, Medicines for Malaria Venture and Global Antibiotic R&D Partnership (GARDP) have also shown the value of collaborations for drug development.   Most recently and particularly post-covid there has also been a clear interest in local innovation - "African Solutions for African Problems". For this to succeed there will need to be a vast investment in talent, infrastructure including regulatory and capital on the continent.   The Novartis Global Health Next Generation Scientists (NGS) program is a small collaborative step on the talent side that we are proud to be part of as University of Basel. Applications are now open until October 31st. If you are a drug development talent in LMIC or know one - please apply or spread the message.   Douglas Haggstrom was lucky enough to meet Christabel Hikaambo in her lab at @University of Cape Town as part of a visit to South Africa recently.
