A favorite during THL last year was the Eucharistic procession. It’s good to know that although we live in turbulent times, and so many things are changing, there are others that remain constant. Christ is with us, truly present in the Eucharist. If only we were willing to spend more time with him, in every tabernacle around the world… If only we would seek and receive Him more often… I think we could truly transform ourselves, our lives and the world.

On May 14, 2016, I was one of several faith-based, business, and community leaders in Phoenix who signed a document at the Arizona State Capitol we called Declaración de Valores. The document we drafted and signed was a rejection of what we identified as the growing corruption of the values inherent to the Hispanic community: faith, life, and family. The document accused the Spanish media and politicians of betraying authentic Latino values and pushing an agenda to supplant them for a set of ideologies. Believe it or not, this type of discourse was somewhat new in 2016. We certainly weren’t the first ones to come forward with such a declaration. But these were the early stages of a world that was awakening to the spread of anti-Christian values in the US and beyond. In the aftermath of our Declaración, we faced criticism from the media for the harshness of the words we used. There were even the early elements of what today we identify as cancel culture manifested against some who participated with me in the initiative. I had never been part of anything like that before. But on May of 2016, I knew faith and family were under attack, and I wanted to do something to help turn back the tide. Fast-forward to today and everyone recognizes we are amid a culture war. It is just a reality we can’t escape. Like any war, there are casualties, found in divorce and the breakdown of the family. Ultimately, at the core of the problems we see in society today is a confusion about what it means to be a human being. It goes to the timeless questions of who we are and why we are here. Today, I read an article titled "Norwegian bishops and 30-plus Christian groups sign declaration against gender ideology." Almost a decade has passed since my own Declaración. And I want to believe there’s light at the end of the tunnel. The world today has a greater awareness of the forces of secularization seeking to undo the good Christianity built in 2000 years. Our foes want to put our light under a bushel basket. We can no longer afford to be lukewarm Catholics. We must realize this is a spiritual battle, which must first be won within, finally, resolutely, sincerely and courageously accepting God’s universal call to holiness. This is The Hour of the Laity! What we need today, more than ever, are more lay Catholics ready to stand for Truth and willing to influence society with the values of the Gospel.
