JUST RELEASED: The Bayh-Dole Coalition just released our 2024 "Faces of American Innovation" report. This second-annual report highlights five amazing people whose work to transform early-stage discoveries into commercial products improved millions of lives across the globe. The 2024 Faces of American Innovation report profiles the following innovators: - Dr. Shafiqul Chowdhury, a professor at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine and senior member of the National Academy of Inventors, developed a vaccine for bovine respiratory disease to reinforce food supplies and prevent virus mutations that could affect humans. - Dr. Rachel Dorin, founder and CEO of TeraPore Technologies, developed the Intelligent Membrane platform to filter impurities out of drugs, making them safe for patients to ingest. - Dr. Ashok Gadgil, a professor at UC Berkeley and researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, invented UV Waterworks, which uses ultraviolet light to purify water on-site in communities lacking potable supplies. - Dr. Hong Hua, a professor at the University of Arizona, developed the eSight -- a pair of electronic glasses that help the legally blind see. - Katharine Ku, a former Stanford University administrator, pioneered a licensing program that set a national standard and facilitated the creation of historic inventions like the Google search algorithm. "For nearly five decades, the Bayh-Dole Act has catalyzed American innovation and improved the quality of life for people here and around the world while making the United States the global innovation powerhouse… This year, we are proud to honor a new class of innovators who seized the opportunity established by the Bayh-Dole Act and are changing the world," says Bayh-Dole Coalition executive director Joseph Allen. Tomorrow marks the start of our second annual Bayh-Dole Coalition American Innovator Award Ceremony & “Faces of American Innovation” Briefing on Capitol Hill! On Wednesday, September 18, our two-day program will begin at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg Center with remarks from Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV) Executive Director of Technology Transfer Steven Kousouris and The Bayh-Dole Coalition board chair Brian P. O'Shaughnessy. The 2024 American Innovator Award Ceremony will honor awardees Dr. Shafiqul Chowdhury, Dr. Rachel Dorin, Dr. Ashok Gadgil, Dr. Hong Hua, and Katharine Ku. Afterward, moderated by Joseph Allen, panelists Brian P. O'Shaughnessy, Katharine Ku, and Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) president & CEO Dr. John Hamre will discuss "The Bayh-Dole Miracle." On Thursday, September 19, the Briefing will open at the Dirksen Senate Office Building with remarks from Rep. I want to give a tremendous congratulations to Dr. Rachel Dorin for being awarded the The Bayh-Dole Coalition's 2024 American Innovator Award. It is a prestigious group she joins, as past recipients have included pioneers from nearly every industry and Nobel Prize recipients. Rachel is the CEO and Founder of TeraPore Technologies, Inc., a client of mine at Johnson, Marcou, Isaacs & Nix, LLC and an Anzu Partners portfolio company. TeraPore is revolutionizing the science behind polymer membranes with their Intelligent Membrane® self-assembled polymer membrane technology. The technology came out of Rachel's PhD program at Cornell University and was licensed through the Center for Technology Licensing at Cornell University (CTL) I've had the privilege of getting to know Rachel and to work with the company for several years now and consider her a tremendous entrepreneur, effective company executive, and a good friend. I cannot think of a more fitting recipient, so please join me in congratulating her. Allen explains the significance and history of the Bayh-Dole Act -- and why march-in rights are not a method of controlling drug prices. "I worked for Senator Birch Bayh many years ago, and he worked with Bob Dole. And they created the law, which is named after them, which basically opened up the doors for collaborations between our public and private sectors. It's actually revolutionized the U.S. economy." "If you start undermining the law by letting the government micromanage it or have people deliberately misinterpret it -- saying that the government can impose price controls on resulting products -- we're going to be in a bad situation." "This is one of the best laws that we passed in probably the last half-century. But like any other law, it's fragile, so it really can be abused. People really need to understand how important it is to our future and make sure we keep it working as it has since 1980." As a graduate student, Dr. Rachel Dorin invented a nanofiltration technology with Professor Uli Wiesner at Cornell University. This week it was announced that Dr. Dorin will receive a 2024 American Innovator Award from The Bayh-Dole Coalition in recognition of her extraordinary work to develop their discovery into a practical, commercial product with applications in medicine and semiconductor manufacturing.
