An interesting initiative by Essex County Council to further reduce the cost of heat pumps for their residents through collective buying
Councils across the UK are using their influence to help residents reduce emissions (although they could be doing more) One of the ways is to provide group buying schemes for renewable energy - usually solar power - which helps residents save on costs as installers can offer lower prices with more guaranteed customers. This is included as a question in our Council Climate Scorecards! Now Essex County Council is working with iChoosr to set up a group buying scheme for heat pumps! Residents can get savings through government grants and collective buying. You can read more here: https://lnkd.in/ezeVrt8M

Southwark Council has been selected as a best practice case study by Blueprint Coalition members, Friends of the Earth and Ashden for their Streets for People scheme, cutting car traffic and making it easier to walk🚶♀️ wheel 🚴♀️ and roll! Read more about the case study at the link below 👇 https://lnkd.in/eYFi_Kxr
We’ve been selected as a best practice case study by Friends of the Earth and Ashden for our ambitious work to improve the air we breathe in Southwark. Polluting vehicles contribute to nearly half of the air pollution in London so, through our Streets for People strategy, we’re moving away from favouring cars and freeing up space for walking, cycling and public transport. We’re improving walking and cycling routes to schools; creating more opportunities to walk and cycle; investing in our community spaces making them safer, greener and more pleasant environments. 60.3% of households in Southwark don’t own a car but at the moment we put cars first – we’re working with our residents and communities to change that. Over 9,000 residents responded to our most recent borough-wide engagement. 73% of people who responded said they are worried about the effects of climate change and 72% are concerned about the impact of poor air quality on children. This is the largest engagement exercise Southwark has ever run, and feedback is being used to help us develop a street-by-street plan, guiding measures such as where we will put cycle hangars, plant new trees, put in pedestrian crossings and more. We would like to thank the following people and teams for all of their hard work and dedication to this cause: Southwark Living Streets, Southwark Cyclists, Coco Yuen Ling Mak, Tom Robison, John Wade, Matt Clubb, Steve Grayer, Menna Davies, Richard Wells, James McAsh, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and many more. Ahead of the #GeneralElection2024 we are setting out our asks of the new government. 3️⃣ Commit to reform and devolve funding streams, and increase flexibility, to enable local authorities to act at the scale and pace required. Council officers waste too much precious time bidding for short-term competitive, narrowly defined funding streams, and funds don't end up with the authorities that need them most. Devolved funding streams will allow councils to take a long term view, building strategic climate action programmes, partnerships and skills. Ahead of the hashtag #GeneralElection2024 we are setting out our manifesto asks. 2️⃣ Commit to a genuine partnership with local authority leaders through a more effective Local Net Zero Forum. Collaboration between local and national government on climate action and adaptation is critical. The Local Net Zero Forum must be strengthened, with ministerial involvement from across government. In common with UK100 and Rt Hon Chris Skidmore we are calling for a framework that sets out how local and national government will act together on the climate and nature emergencies.
