Due to a growing skills shortage and a lack of targeted support, the home building industry could struggle to meet the ambitious Government housing targets. Our latest research, “A Hard Hat to Fill”, reveals the scale of the workforce challenge ahead. The report highlights... ➡️ 240,000 additional skilled workers are needed to meet housing targets, including 20,000 bricklayers, 20,000 groundworkers, and 2,400 electricians. ➡️ Apprenticeship numbers are falling short. Last year, only 10% of the required bricklaying apprenticeships were completed. ➡️ The industry faces a significant skills gap, with 25% of the current workforce over 50, risking a “retirement cliff edge.” The skills crisis is hampering progress, and urgent action is needed to address it. That’s why we’re calling on the Government to... 👉 Simplify access to funding for SMEs to train apprentices and close the skills gap. 👉 Directly engage with the home building industry to develop a tailored skills plan to ensure we can deliver the homes we need. 👉 Increase investment in further education colleges to ensure they provide the skills required for a work-ready workforce.

“A key point overlooked in much of the coverage of the Spring Statement is that the OBR has forecast a significant shortfall against the Government’s 1.5 million homes target.” 🎯 🏡 📉 While home building took centre stage in this week’s Spring Statement, reinforcing the Government’s commitment to increasing housing supply, it also underscored the need for action beyond planning reforms to address broader delivery constraints that remain unaddressed. Our Director of External Affairs, Emma Ramell reflects on the Chancellor’s speech… ...uncovering what it really means for the industry …and explaining why the road ahead remains uncertain. 👇 https://lnkd.in/ej3ARJCR

Yesterday, the Government confirmed a £600 million investment to train 60,000 skilled construction workers by 2029. This includes funding for… 👉 10 new Technical Excellence Colleges 👉 colleges to deliver more construction courses 👉 foundation apprenticeships and additional placements 👉 the expansion of Skills Bootcamps in the construction sector 👉 all Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) areas to form partnerships between colleges and construction companies, and increase the number of teachers with construction experience 👉 a capital fund to support employers to deliver bespoke training based on their needs This is welcome news. If the other constraints to increasing supply can be addressed, our estimates show we will need to recruit tens of thousands of skilled workers to deliver at the pace and scale set out. Ensuring FE courses and apprenticeships are producing work ready students is key to reducing the large number of young people we lose before they even enter our industry. We are working with industry to address long-standing challenges in attracting and retaining the workforce, through initiatives like the Skills Hub, Partner a College and Women into Home Building. The announcement of further funding for construction skills and targeted initiatives builds on this work, and should support companies large and small in taking on more trainees and apprentices. We stand ready to play a full role in the Government's Construction Skills Mission Board and to engage directly on house building specific skills issues such that we can create a framework that allows us to deliver. While we have you… We have released new research today on skills – more on that to come later…
