New CDC data reveals a slight improvement in American teenagers' mental health, which previously was shown to be declining in recent years. For instance, from 2021 to 2023, high schoolers experiencing persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness decreased from 42% to 40%. However, there are still notable mental health disparities, especially among women and LGBTQ+ high schoolers. Mental health data is important for understanding how to provide greater access to care. According to Mental Health America's "State of Mental Health in America" report, in 2021-2022, 23% of adults experienced a mental illness in the past year, equivalent to nearly 60 million Americans.
